COVID-19 Updates

The way we travel in the near future is changing. As our customers, we put your safety first. Please find updates on how our car hire partners are changing their processes to provide as much safety for you during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are closely monitoring the information shared by the World Health Organization concerning advice on how to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

To help protect our staff and customers we are encouraging regular hand washing, and the use of hand sanitizer, where available. We already had a very thorough cleaning processes in place to ensure our vehicles are always at the highest standard for customers.

Since the development of the Coronavirus around the world, we have further enhanced our cleaning protocols which includes thorough, multiple-point focus areas using industry-grade cleaning solution throughout the vehicle, paying particular attention to hard surfaces that people touch, such as steering wheels, door handles, key fobs and dashboards.In addition, we are taking steps to ensure the welfare of our employees. This includes instructing employees who feel ill to stay home and consult their healthcare providers.

With the rising concern over the spread of Coronavirus [COVID-19] we want you to know the enhanced cleaning and precautionary measures we have put in place.

Every high contact area in our offices, including counter surfaces and terminals, are cleaned with disinfectant every 2 hours.

• Hand sanitiser dispensers are available for all Customers and Employees
• The interior of our Courtesy Shuttle Buses are disinfected at least three times a day
• All high contact areas and surfaces in the interior of our rental cars are cleaned with disinfectant between every rental

​Your safety, as well as the safety of our people, is our #1 priority!


  • In our branches; all counter tops and equipment (such as tablets, pens and credit card machines) will be cleaned and sanitised after serving each customer. We’re also introducing Plexiglass windows with the intention of reducing contact.
  • In our vehicles; stringent cleaning with systematic use of disinfecting agents between each rental with specific attention given to the gear shift, glove box, seat belts, internal and external handles, the dashboard (including all dials and buttons), steering wheel and indicators, rear view mirror and keys. Child seats and GPS units will be cleaned to strict guidelines.


​The safety of our staff and customers is a priority to Hertz. Like everyone, we're adapting to the current COVID-19 situation and observing all national and international measures to minimise the spread of the virus.

We wanted to take this time to reassure you that the utmost attention is being paid to cleaning. As well as our usual high standards of cleaning, all of our vehicles are now going through an enhanced process, which involves the sanitising of every vehicle between each rental using detergent cleaning products.

In addition to our standard cleaning service, we are disinfecting the following hard surfaces:

  • Door handles (inside and out)
  • Steering wheel
  • Key area
  • Handbrake
  • Seat belt fittings/clips
  • Entire console area

Any hard surface areas previously cleaned will now be cleaned with disinfectant.

Across all Hertz locations, we are continually sanitising our rental counters and customer touchpoints. We are also doing this in our customer return areas.

As we carry out these additional cleaning measures, we apologise for any inconvenience or delays you may experience.

Thrifty Australia

What we are doing to keep you safe?

Peace of mind when you travel especially in times like this is critical. At Thrifty we have implemented rigorous hygiene standards and adopted safe work practices in regard to our vehicles and our locations.

1. Disinfectant used

Thrifty uses an ethanol (alcohol) based cleaning product for all our vehicles. We hold high levels of stock of this product and will replenish as required to maintain compliance with Department of Health Guidelines (attached).

2. Quarantine of vehicle

Thrifty will quarantine a vehicle for a minimum of 4 days, beyond the 72 hour threshold prescribed prior to cleaning. This will not only ensure the safety of our clients but also that of our employees. As previously noted all our cleaning staff are required to abide by our COVID-19 processes and PPE equipment guidelines.
