Car Rental and the Coronavirus in Australia

COVID-19 updates

Latest Border Closures - December 2020

Due to the latest border closures in Australia, we are experiencing higher than usual requests from our customers. Your continued support and patience is appreciated at this time.

Update from VroomVroomVroom

Early trends in rental car bookings are projecting fleets from major suppliers will sell out in the lead up to the holiday season.

Mike Boyd

With the curve in COVID-19 cases successfully flattened, states have begun opening their borders, inviting Australians to travel interstate without requirements for quarantine. This has resulted in a nationwide spike in rental car sales.

Due to recently reduced fleet sizes across the country, car rental companies are now struggling to meet the sudden surge in demand, and industry officials are urging customers to book in advance for Christmas and New Years, especially in cities such as Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, and regional cities where current fleets are highly limited.

Mike Boyd, CEO of industry aggregator VroomVroomVroom.com.au, has endorsed these recommendations, citing a rapid spike in web traffic and bookings correlating to state borders opening in early November. “Aussie’s have plenty of pent up demand for travel which will all be directed toward domestic holidays for the foreseeable future. We welcome everyone holidaying at home after a tough year for the industry and encourage everyone to book early to avoid disappointment.”

Mr Boyd added that while VroomVroomVroom and supplier companies are working around the clock to resolve instances of fleet limitations, customers planning to travel over the holidays should make arrangements sooner rather than later to avoid missing out.

If you are yet to book your holiday rental car, visit vroomvroomvroom.com.au today, or contact the customer care team on 1300 722 920, available weekdays from 9am to 5pm AEST.

What we are doing to keep you safe?

Peace of mind when you travel especially in times like this is critical. At Thrifty we have implemented rigorous hygiene standards and adopted safe work practices in regard to our vehicles and our locations.

1. Disinfectant used

Thrifty uses an ethanol (alcohol) based cleaning product for all our vehicles. We hold high levels of stock of this product and will replenish as required to maintain compliance with Department of Health Guidelines (attached).

2. Quarantine of vehicle

Thrifty will quarantine a vehicle for a minimum of 4 days, beyond the 72 hour threshold prescribed prior to cleaning. This will not only ensure the safety of our clients but also that of our employees. As previously noted all our cleaning staff are required to abide by our COVID-19 processes and PPE equipment guidelines.
