How to add a child seat or GPS to your car rental booking

Extras

When booking a hire car through VroomVroomVroom — or the VroomVroomVroom app — the option to add a GPS unit or child seats are displayed below the details of your selected vehicle. If selected — and available at the time of booking — the cost of the equipment will be added to your overall booking charge. Other options, such as bringing your pets with you in a rental car, vary from one rental provider to another.

Be aware that some car rental providers retain both child seats and GPS “on request” so the cost may not be added at the time of booking. Once confirmed, the VroomVroomVroom customer care team will follow up with you to let you know the equipment has been added to your booking before providing you with the updated cost for your booking. If you don’t see an option in the booking flow to add extras, please contact our customer care team for assistance.

All you need to know about child seats and hire cars

When booking a rental car, it’s important to be mindful of the laws around child seats in Australia. It’s the legal responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers are secured in the vehicle correctly, including having children in the appropriate restraints. If your child is six months old or younger, a rear-facing child seat is required. Children under the age of seven should never sit in the front of the car, and depending on their age, may need to be fastened into a child seat of some kind.

What type of child seat will I need?

The type of child seat required will depend on the age, height, and weight of your child, as outlined in the general guide below.

  • Under 6 months: Rear-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness. Capsules are not available to hire from car rental companies — only rear-facing seats.
  • 6 months to 4 years: Rear-facing child seat or a forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness.
  • 4 years to 7 years: Forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness or a booster seat with a harness.
  • Over 7 years: Booster seat with a harness. If your child is taller than 145 cm, they’ll be able to use the standard seat and an adult seatbelt.

Depending on the height and weight of your child, there may be exceptions to the above rules. For more information, please visit https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/.

How do I add a child seat to my car rental booking?

Baby seats and child booster seats can be requested during the booking process if pick-up is more than 48 hours away. If you need to add a rear-facing, forward-facing child seat, or a booster seat to your booking, you can do so during your booking process on VroomVroomVroom — subject to seat availability. If the option for child seats is “on request,” our customer care team will contact you to confirm your request and let you know the revised cost of your booking.

In the event you need more than two child seats, please contact us directly as this request will depend on availability and the type of vehicle you are renting. Also please note that forward or rear-facing seats cannot be used in 12-seater vehicles because they lack the anchor point required to properly secure these types of seats. However, booster seats can be used in 12-seaters.

If you have already made your booking and now need to add a child seat, you can request a child seat by contacting our customer care team.

How much does it cost to add a child seat to my booking?

Car rental providers will generally add a daily fee to your booking for each child seat. This daily cost will vary depending on your rental provider and will be outlined in the Terms and Conditions of your selected provider.

All you need to know about adding a GPS to your car rental booking

If you’re planning to drive in big cities like Sydney or Melbourne — or to specific locations — a GPS unit can help take the stress out of navigating unfamiliar roads, and adding one to your rental car booking is easy with VroomVroomVroom. Most suppliers will offer a GPS device that can be easily clipped into a holder within the rental vehicle.

How do I request a GPS?

Depending on unit availability, with VroomVroomVroom you have the option to add a GPS request on the booking page — if your pickup time is more than 48 hours away. If the GPS unit is listed as “on request,” our team will get in touch with you to confirm your GPS and the updated cost of your booking. If there’s no option to add a GPS when booking — or if you’ve already placed your booking — feel free to contact our customer care team.

How much will it cost to add a GPS to my car rental booking?

As with child seats, rental providers will charge a daily fee for any GPS devices added to your booking. The daily cost of the GPS unit will vary depending on your rental provider. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions of your selected provider for current pricing.

Can you take your pets in a hire car?

Rules around taking your pets with you in a hire car vary between car rental providers. As each location is different, it is best to contact our team if you plan on travelling with a pet, and they can get in touch with your pick-up depot to double-check for you. Car rental companies will generally allow small pets to travel along with you, though the car must be returned in the same condition in which it was rented out, and cleaning fees will apply. If there’s any damage to the vehicle by your pet, you will be charged for the damage or charged an additional cleaning fee.

You are not permitted to travel with pets in a Thrifty vehicle.

Can you request a tow bar or roof racks to be fitted to a hire car?

Unfortunately none of our suppliers allow tow bars or roof racks to be attached to their vehicles.
