History of Europcar Australia

Europcar rental history

Europcar's commitment is to provide friendly and efficient service to their consumers and assure them that they'll “rent a lot more than a car.” And for more than six decades, the company has been providing excellent service to their clients.

Who are the Owners

Europcar is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eurazeo. Having up to 6 billion euros in diverse assets and to more than 5.5 billion euros in market capitalization, Eurazeo is one of the top listed investment companies in Europe. Since the acquisition by Eurazeo in March 2006, Europcar became one of the top 3 global players in the car rental industry.
But before landing with Eurazeo, Europcar has gone through a lot of partnerships and acquisitions with different companies.

When it started

Europcar was founded in Paris in 1949 and after twenty one years, it was purchased by Renault. In 1973, subsidiaries in Belgium, Germany, Holland and Switzerland were created.
In 1981, together with the acquisition of Godfrey Davis UK, Europcar became Europcar International.
A subsidiary in Portugal was created in 1982. After six years, Wagon-Lits purchased Europcar and sold 50% of its shares to Volkswagen.
In 1989, a merger with Interrent Car Rental GmbH was made.
In 1992, Wagon-Lits was acquired by Accor including its 50% shares of Europcar.

Latest Status

By February 1999, Europcar launched an innovative Online Reservation System via internet. Volkswagen AG also became the sole shareholders in Europcar, demonstrated its faith in the ability of the Europcar board and showed commitment in developing as a lifestyle company.
In 2000, Budget Rent A Car was announced as the new strategic partner of Europcar in Canada and North America.

In 2006, Eurazeo acquired Europcar. At the same year, Mazda in Japan became one of their partners and the operations in India through franchise started.
In 2007 through 2008, acquisitions of the European businesses of Vanguard (National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car), Betacar (Balearic and Canary Islands), and ECA Car Rental ? which became Europcar's master franchisee in Australia and New Zealand ? took place.

In 2008, they formed the World's largest Car Rental Network through a strategic alliance with Enterprise Rent-A-Car which is the largest car rental company in North America. The alliance offered a fleet of more than 1.2 million vehicles at more than 13 000 locations in about 150 countries.

And in 2009, more partners added ? Nissan and Renault ? to market electric vehicles and advance zero-emission mobility on a global scale.
Europcar is not just an ordinary car rental company. It is an environment-concerned car rental company.

Since the founding of Europcar, they have been developing several Eco-citizen initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.
And for a long time, Europcar has been living their key objective ? “Environmental respect”.
Ten years ago, Europcar opened the first Environmental Station in Paris which offers costumers the chance to rent electric and hybrid vehicles. This shows how Europcar is deeply committed to the environment and to the sustainability and prides itself on being the industry leader in its field. Being committed to the environment, Europcar became the first car rental company to receive Bureau Veritas Certification for its Environmental Charter.
