Below is a summary of the most important information. If you have further questions, please contact our customer care team.
The Excess Damage Fee can range between AUD $5,500 and AUD $7,920—or up to AUD $9,570 for luxury/speciality vehicles—and will be specified in the Rental Agreement you accept upon pick up.
The excess is the most you’ll pay towards repairs for damages to the vehicle’s bodywork, where the repairs are covered by the rental provider’s basic insurance. The basic insurance often doesn’t cover damage to other parts of the vehicle (overhead, underbody, interior, windows, wheels) or other charges (misfuelling, loss of use, key loss, towing, roadside assistance, child seats, GPS devices, personal belongings); you may be charged full costs for repair or replacement expenses that are not covered by the basic insurance.
Protection options to reduce or reimburse the rental vehicle excess are available. These options include third-party Rental Vehicle Excess insurance, and excess reduction waivers sold by the rental provider at the rental counter.
Percentage of the total transaction value will be charged by Europcar.
Europcar will pre-authorise a security deposit on the nominated card upon collection of the rental vehicle.
The security deposit amount is equal to the total estimated rental charges, plus an additional amount of AUD $200 for accepted credit cards or AUD $500 for accepted debit cards.
For Elite, Premium, Prestige, and Luxury vehicles, a pre-authorisation for the total rental amount plus AUD $500 is taken. Debit cards are not accepted for Prestige vehicle payments.
Not all Europcar depots accept debit cards. Please contact VroomVroomVroom when booking for assistance in finding a suitable location for debit card payments.
For luxury and special vehicle models, two credit cards in the primary driver’s name are required, and a pre-authorisation will be requested on each.
Both cards need to be in the primary driver's name where the second credit card can be a debit credit card. This rule applies to Elite, Premium, Prestige, and Luxury vehicles under SIPP codes: JDAR, JGAR, PDAR, JTAF, LTAR, LDAR, RDAF, GFDR, GFJD, LFGD, and UFFV.
Upon commencement of the booking, renters are required to present a valid passport or national ID card, an unrestricted driver licence printed in English, and an accepted credit or debit card.

Europcar can now accept digital licences across all Europcar locations in Australia.
Please note the following information for customers with a NSW or South Australian digital license:
South Australia - Digital License requirements
South Australian digital licences are provided through the mySA GOV app (Apple or Android only). On collection Europcar will request the driver to present their mobile to show they are displaying the digital license from the mySA Gov app. As a security measure a “shake-to-animate” feature has been added to the app, which will animate the screen and display the current time and date when their phone is shaken to show that it is not a screenshot.
New South Wales - Digital License requirements
NSW Digital licences are provided through the MyService NSW app (Apple or Android only). On collection Europcar will request the driver to present their mobile to show they are displaying the digital license from the MyService NSW app.
Please note that Europcar is accepting Australian digital licences only. As a precaution, we recommend that you also carry your physical licence with you to cover any possible issues that may arise with your phone e.g flat battery.
