Main Attractions within Whyalla
The Model Railway
What you've absolutely got to see is the Model Railway! It's one of the biggest HO scale model railways in the country and it showcases railway lines between One Steel in Whyalla and iron mines in Iron Knob, a link Whyalla to Port Augusta, and Port Augusta to Adelaide. As for the trains? Well, they're decked with iron ore trains, cargo trains, IndianPacific, The Ghan and grain trains to make the experience even more realistic. I mean, you've gotta appreciate attention to detail like that!
And wait until you get a load of these figures! The entire tracks extends 226 metres with 28 points, 12 point motors and 500 m of double core cable with 26 relays. For a miniature model, doesn't that just sound huge?!
Ada Ryan Gardens
Now, when visiting a city I think it's a must that one should take a look at its most popular park. In Whyalla's case, this favourite park of theirs is the Ada Ryan Gardens! You can find it in between Cudmore and Watson Terraces and it's connected to the Whyalla Foreshore to give more space for relaxation.
Ada Ryanis proud to offer well-shaded lawns and gardens; barbecue and picnic facilities at no additional cost; a mini-zoo of sorts that has kangaroos, a duck pond, birds and other wildlife; and of course, sporting facilities and playground equipment. I'm certain every member of the family's going to find something to do here that's worth their while. The place just spells FUN!
Hummock Hill Lookout
Hummock Hillwas established by the BHP to commemorate BHP's centenary year and was turned over to the City Council during the 1986 South Australian Jubilee 150 Royal visit. It now overlooks the entire eastern end of Whyalla. Here you can get the best view of the city and the complete expanse of One Steel operations, Whyallaforeshore and marina, across Spencer Gulf to the Southern Flinders Ranges and nearby Point Lowly Lighthouse and the Santos Plant at Port Bonython, and westward towards the iron ore rich Middleback Ranges.
Here at Hummock Hill, you get the highest bird's eye view possible! There's definitely nothing like it!
The Hummock Hill represents a good location to admire Whyalla panorama and the port, from a higher level ground. The Hummock Hill makes for amazing images and many people come here to relax and take in all the magnificent scenery, to paint, take photographs or to write. On the hill, people can see remains of fortifications and other historical landmarks.
Whyalla Maritime Museum represents one of the largest collections of maritime items, being a journey through local history and port related events. Hop in your car rental and visit the museum showcasing many artifacts, one of the most visible and notable ones being the HMAS Whyalla, a corvette built for the Second World War, which became a touristic attraction in 1987. Visitors in a hire car may enjoy an interesting history lesson through the guided tours offered by the museum.
Whyalla Conservation Park is located near Whyalla and it is the place where people can find out more about species of animals and plants living in this semi-arid area. The climate is as such that only some species are able to survive here. After parking your rental car, visitors may enjoy walking and hiking in the park, as well as admiring specific landscape, flora and fauna.
Snapper Fishing Competition is held every year in Whyalla and only accepts people who have not fished for commercial purposes in the past year. It is a great event for locals and visitors, for it offers fun activities and shows over an entire weekend. Be sure to witness the competition that results in prizes won by the fisherman who caught the heaviest fish.
Whyalla is thus a place for admiring cultural local heritage and all that nature has to offer in these beautiful surroundings. Rent a car and take part in this maritime experience in all events and venues.
