Originally founded in 1883, Onslow was a port at the mouth of Ashburton River for exporting wool from the sheep stations of the Pilbarahinterland. The town was named after the former Chief Justice of Western Australia, Sir Alexander Campbell Onslow. It serves as a gateway to the Mackerel Islands.
