Some considerations for driving a hire car in and around Charleville

Remember where you are

In Australia, people drive on the left hand side of the road — even if they are driving a rental car! It seems like a simple point, but if you’re not used to this, it can be an easy thing to forget — especially in moments of anxiety. Remember the cardinal rule: left is best.

Don’t use your phone while driving

Queensland has very strict laws regarding the use of a smartphone while driving and the fines are high. It is illegal to hold a mobile phone in your hand, or have it resting on any part of your body while driving, and this applies even if you are stopped in traffic. Fines can be as high as AUD$1,078.

Watch out for wildlife

Australia’s wildlife is one of its greatest attractions, but if, after you’ve picked up your hire car in Charleville, you’re out in the countryside, please remember you’re in their turf and it pays to be extra-aware when driving a rental car out there. Wildlife such as kangaroos and emus can be unpredictable and fast-moving, so watch your speed and keep your distance. If you’re concerned, always slow down.

Choose the right type of rental vehicle

If you’re planning on hiring a car in Charleville and using it as a base for some countryside trips, then a rental 4WD is perhaps a more prudent choice than a conventional rental car such as a SUV, sedan or hatchback. Do bear in mind that most hire cars are not permitted to be driven off-road. Keep an eye on your fuel gauge and always make sure you have plenty of water in your vehicle.

Yes, that’s a train on the road

As with Western Australia, Queensland is home to some of the longest — and largest — trucks in the world, some of which can be as long as 60 metres in length, and they’ve well and truly earned their nickname of “road trains.” When overtaking one (always take care, regardless of what you are overtaking), bear in mind that overtaking a road train will take longer than overtaking a regular truck.

Click clack front and back

In Queensland, the driver of a hire car and all passengers seven years and older must wear a seatbelt. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure all passengers are wearing their seatbelt. Children under the age of seven must be in a properly fastened Australian Standard approved child restraint. Fines can be as high as AUD$1,078 per offence.

Move your hire car and learn that one of the most important moments in the history of the city is linked to the development of rail transportation, which reached Charleville in 1888. The improvement was huge for Charleville, as it connected the city with the state's capital, facilitating the development of this amazing town. Drive your hire car to the city that is currently known for its unique heritage.
