Grandpa's Guide to Driving in Karratha

Howdy, friends! Do you want to have a break from the humdrum of your daily life? The Grandpa Ben is here to bring you not just a break but an adventure you have always been dreaming about. And the destination? Brace yourselves for I am about to take you to Karratha!

It is a town in Western Australia, adjoining the port of Dampier in the Pilbarra. The town got its name from the cattle station from which the land was reclaimed for the development. Karratha actually means ‘goog country’ or ‘soft earth’. It was built around 1968 to accommodate the workers in iron mines. Now it is a busy town boasting its God given beautiful parks.

Hey! Are you leaving already? Do you have all the things you need? Do you have a perfect car rental already? No? Then you better visit Karratha Car Rental so can have a very affordable and problem-and-hassle-free car.
Now that we are all set, you better buckle up because we are leaving in a flash!

1. Millstream-Chichester National Park

How can you possible put into words the beauty that leaves you not only breathless but speechless as well? You can’t! The best way is to take a picture (a picture paints a thousand words, so the song goes) of its hidden pools, beautiful landscapes and awesome flora and fauna.

2. Kirijini National Park

This park happens to be one of the largest national parks in Western Australia (second only to Rudall River National Park), also one of the most spectacular. Why spectacular? Let us see: amazing gorges, towering waterfalls and cool swimming holes. And how do you experience it in a Karratha way? Let me tell you how. You go through subterranean gorges then go under the towering waterfalls then dive into sparkling, crystal clear waters of the rock pools. Do I need to add about the breath taking and interesting flora and fauna?

3. Murujuga (Burrup Peninsula)

The locals call this amazing place “The Burrup”. It was named after the island’s highest hill. Originally it was called by the Aborigines Murujuga or Murrijuga.
So what do we see here? Have you ever heard of petroglyphs? Petroglyphs or rock engravings are usually more than a thousand years old. And Murujuga has plenty of rock engravings. From small emus to Tasmanian tigers (which are now extinct) to whales and many more. Most of these rock engravings are used for ceremonial activities. They were carved by the Jaburara people who once lived here. But the sad part is that they have been wiped out  so no one can tell us exactly what they mean and for what kind of ceremonies they were used for.
Well, at least they left us with something that could take our breath away and leave our minds pondering.

From one awesome park to another spectacular park then to mind boggling rock engravings all in one place. You don’t get this deal anywhere but only here in Karratha. ! Enjoy!

Cheers!

-Grandpa Ben
