France 2023 Rugby World Cup

The 2023 Rugby World Cup will be held in September and October 2023, with events spread across nine participating cities in France. If you’re planning on attending the World Cup, adding a hire car to your packing list is a great way to get more out of your trip. Not only will you have the convenience of your own wheels to zoom — of should that be “vroom” — around the city and get to the games, you’ll also be able to explore the beautiful French countryside, or even attend games in multiple cities.

Read on for some quick tips for those new to driving in France, along with a brief introduction to each World Cup city, some competitive rates on hire cars over the match periods, and some frequently asked questions and answers.

The matches will be held in Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Paris (Saint-Denis), Saint-Étienne, and Toulouse. In case your geography is a bit rusty, here’s a map marking each stadium for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Top hire car tips for driving anywhere in France

  1. Important: In France you drive on the right hand side of the road.
  2. To rent a hire car in France, you will need: Your driver’s licence, a credit card in your name, and a photograph ID such as your passport.
  3. The legal driving age in France is 18, but most rental agents require a minimum age of 21, and many apply a surcharge on drivers under the age of 25.
  4. The motorway speed limit in France is 130 km/h, but 110 km/h in the rain — so keep an eye on the weather! On dual carriageways, the limits drop to 110 and 100 km/h respectively, and on single carriageways to 80 and 70 km/h. On inner city and urban roads, the speed limit is generally 50 km/h
  5. Driving a vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC level) greater than 0.5 g/L is prohibited for all drivers.
