Panoramic view from Sydney Harbour National Park

Australia is undeniably a complete travel destination because of its amazing landscapes, heavenly beaches, relaxed lifestyle and easygoing atmosphere. There's always something for every kind of traveller: the weather is great, plenty of beautiful spots and coastlines worth stopping by, unique and incredible animals to see, as well as meeting the friendly locals. Travelling in Australia can be heaven on Earth. But if you don't plan carefully, you may find yourself squandering most of your travel funds before you even realise it, thus spoiling your holiday mood.

Best Ways to Save on Australia Travel

Here at VroomVroomVroom, we want to make your life a little bit easier. Below are a few tips and tricks on how to save and make your money last when travelling to one of the best places to visit in the world.

    Do your homework

Book as early as you can. This is in fact, we would say the most critical tip of all. Note that the early you purchase your flights, the greater the chance you will find a decent, sometimes cheap fare. If you wait until the last-minute, expect seats to be more expensive. We always recommend booking in advance because in most cases, it can find you an awesome rates on things, such as flights, accommodation or even on hire cars.

    Travel during off season

When is the best time to visit Australia? Literally any of the months (and seasons), except between December and February, which is summer in Australia and the most favoured time to visit places like Melbourne and Sydney. Avoid peak season and simply take any of the months outside of summer and you are good to go! One more tip, you will probably get cheaper fares throughout the spring and fall seasons.

    Visit a national park

There are more than 500 great National Parks in Australia, and while you'll probably pay to enter, the fees are nothing for what you'll see, gain and experience.

Some of Australia's amazing parks worth visiting include the Flinders Ranges National Park in South Australia, Purnululu National Park in Western Australia, Kakadu National Park in Northern Territory, Great Sandy National Park in Queensland, Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania, Port Campbell National Park in Victoria and Royal National Park in New South Wales.

    Stay in a hostel

There are lots of good hostels available in Australia that offer great facilities and excellent services for all tastes. To cut some costs, why not give hostel a try? Dorm rooms can range from $30 to $40 a night. You may also find decent hostels outside of the city center that can range about $20. Exchanging homes, staying in an Airbnb, and couchsurfing have become popular too.

Save money on food and drinks

To save more money on food and drinks, consider buying cheap produce at larger markets, eat pub meals, dine at Asian restaurants, or order takeaways and delivery from restaurants with deals on. Also, go grocery shopping as much as possible. When in Australia, ordering cocktails at a bar or restaurant is not ideal as they normally cost around $18-20, which is not great value for money. Instead, just opt for a glass of house wine which only costs anywhere from $6 to $8.

    Do a work exchange

Planning to extend your stay in Australia for a few more days or weeks even? Then consider doing a work exchange. The idea of work exchange comes from a collaborative exchange between a traveller and a host who needs a little extra support. To save a few dollars, offer your expertise and time in exchange for free accommodation and food, for a limited number of hours per day/week.

    Buddy up on transport

If you are one of the few who are staying in a hostel, chances are you are going to meet new people there that also want to get and tour around Australia. To save more, why not buddy up on renting a car or if you prefer a  campervan, especially if you feel you hit it off with some new tourist friends. This will allow you to get around Australia anytime, anywhere, at your own pace.

Whether you are going solo or tagging along with your significant other, a car hire in Australia is highly-recommended.

Renting a car will give you the perfect opportunity to see all the marvelous attractions Australia has to offer, including climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, surfing at Bondi Beach and driving the  Great Ocean Roadscuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef or simply having a blast at the Gold Coast theme parks.  Melbourne is a lovely place to visit and a car hire is exactly what you need to fully explore this vibrant city. Rent outside the airport

Do you know you can save more money when you book from off-airport locations than booking a car hire at the airport ? The reason being is airport car rental kiosks usually charge a airport concession fee, so the next time you travel, take a taxi or ride the other transit into town and just rent a car from there.

Go for the same pick-up and drop-off location

Finally, avoid one-way booking as it is always more expensive! Say you are picking up your car hire in Perth and decide to return it to the Adelaide Airport, you may be surprised to know that you will collect a 'one-way' drop off fee. It is always recommended to select the same location for pick-up and drop-off so you can get cheaper rates.
