Driving in a different vehicle can be daunting, especially in a larger vehicle. Here’s what you need to know.
Generally speaking, if you want to hire a commercial vehicle in Melbourne you’re looking for something bigger than a car such as a 4WD, truck, ute, van or other specialty vehicle whose primary purpose is the transportation of goods or people
Most utes, vans, and moving trucks up to 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) can be driven on a standard car licence. Larger trucks, like a 6.4m Pantech, require a Medium Rigid (MR) licence. Always check the specific requirement for the vehicle you book.
Melbourne is known for low-clearance bridges, such as the Montague Street Bridge. As the driver, you are responsible for ensuring your vehicle can pass safely. Before you drive a van or truck, check the vehicle's height and plan your route using the official Victorian Height Clearance Map. Be aware that some vans and trucks are classified as Light or Heavy Commercial Vehicles and are charged at a higher rate than cars.
Utes are well suited to large boxes of mixed sizes while vans, thanks to their enclosed roof, have a fixed limit on the height and width of the load. When you are comparing a similar-sized van and ute, you’ll almost certainly fit more into a ute — but it won’t be as well protected from a rainy day in Melbourne.
