Toll Charges and How They Affect Hiring A Car!

When hiring a car in Australia, there may be a need to pay toll charges on some of the main roads. There is much to consider and we thought you would want to know your options before you book a rental car.  Each car hire supplier in every location may have different terms when dealing with tolls roads and charges. We have covered the 3 major cities - Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney - you can avoid the toll roads, however they are much more convenient to use.

When hiring a car, it is always best to read the Terms & Conditions for Toll Charge information. Car hire suppliers will add an administration fee for any unpaid toll notices that they may receive for the time you have a hire car. Therefore, it is extremely important that you know how to pay for Tolls or how the supplier will charge before you drive away in a rental.

Our awesome customer service team can assist 24/5, however here is some useful information that they have provided to help you out.

Note: Pay per day or per toll depending on the supplier's conditions - usually a toll plus around $2.50* - $5.00* each time you pass through a toll.

Do you know what the GoVia Tag is telling you?

When you go through a toll with a tag on your car, it should automatically beep to let you know that the car has been detected.  Sometimes it may beep more than once.

1 Beep means all is well.

1 Beep + 2 Beeps means that the balance on your tag is low and will automatically top itself up.

4 Beeps means that the top up has failed and you should contact the supplier immediately to discuss what needs to be done. This could save you money as you do not want to be charged extra fees for not paying your tolls.

New Hertz Toll Day Pass

The new Hertz Toll Day Pass covers all toll charges under one daily amount, so drivers don't need to worry about keeping records of tollways and sorting out payments via various websites. No subsequent toll charges or administration fees will apply, and many drivers will save money as they need to use numerous tollways.

Travellers can choose the Hertz Toll Day Pass at any time during their rental. Charges for this service will appear on the invoice at the end of the rental period. Due to varying toll prices in different States, from February 1 the Hertz Toll Day Pass will be calculated based on the State where you collect your car. Rates for passenger vehicles are:
  • VIC: $14.30 per rental day
  • SA: $12.10 per rental day
  • NSW and ACT: $16.50 per rental day
  • QLD: $11.10 per rental day
All prices are inclusive of GST. Heavy vehicles incur a higher variable toll charge per rental day due to higher toll prices.

Longer Term Rentals

For longer term rentals that may have infrequent toll usage, there is an alternative option that records all toll roads on which the vehicle has been used during the rental. The actual toll amounts and a matching fee will be charged along with an administration fee of $16.50 incl GST per 30-day rental, which will be invoiced by Hertz shortly after the rental has concluded.

Hertz will now invoice all toll usage directly, so renters will no longer be billed by any third parties such as Roam Express and all charges will only appear on Hertz issued invoices.
