Additional fees

SIXT may levy an additional charge for any of the following (though not limited to) cases:

  • Additional drivers

  • Child seats

  • Snow cover

  • GPS

  • Extended areas of use

Additional driver

SIXT allows the addition of additional drivers charged at $5.50 per day. Note that any additional nominated driver, as with the primary driver, must have a full drivers licence and be present when the vehicle is collected at the beginning of the rental period.

Age restrictions

The minimum age for renting a hire car with SIXT is 21 years old for standard vehicles (25 for 4WD and other specified classes of vehicle), and there is no maximum age specified. SIXT levies a daily surcharge on drivers under the age of 25.

Animals

SIXT does not allow dogs, cats, and other animals in their rental cars, however it does allow service animals.

Cancellations

If you cancel your SIXT booking through a no show, or even with prior notice, depending on the payment method selected, there may be a cancellation charge applied.

Child seats and GPS

SIXT can provide child, baby, and booster seats. These all conform to government standards, and as supplies are limited, please order a child seat at the time of your reservation, stating the age of your child so the correct type of child seat can be booked. There is a maximum of three such seats per vehicle, and if more than two are required, a larger vehicle may be needed. It is the responsibility of the renter to fit the seat as SIXT takes no responsibility for the incorrect or unsafe installation of child seats. Child seats are charged at $19 per day per seat.

Credit and debit card surcharges

SIXT applies a surcharge of 1.1% on Mastercard and Visa.

Damage to/loss of rental vehicle

In the unfortunate event of an accident:

  • If there are injured people, contact emergency services first.

  • Contact SIXT with relevant information including the licence plate, make and model, colour (if known), nature of fault, precise location of vehicle, contact number, and whereabouts of keys.

  • Prepare a written accident/damage report

  • Submit the report to SIXT.

Digital licences

SIXT accepts all Australia-issued digital licences.

Driving in snow

If you plan to drive your SIXT rental car above the snow line between 1 June and 31 October, you will need to purchase a Snow Pass. Not all SIXT vehicles are permitted to be driven in snow.

Driving licence requirements

SIXT recognises all current non-provisional and non-probationary Australian drivers licences and current overseas licences. Accepted drivers licences must be valid, in English with a photo, and must be produced at the commencement of the rental. Should the licence be in a language other than English or have no photo, SIXT will accept a certified translation in English or an International Driving Permit. Should the licence not have a photo, an International Driving Permit must accompany it.

SIXT accepts all Australia-issued digital licences.

Driving restrictions

SIXT prohibits using its vehicles in ways that risk damage, violate the law, or breach safety standards. This includes reckless driving, driving under the influence, using the wrong fuel, or ignoring warning lights and signals. Causing damage to the roof, undercarriage, windscreen line, or from overloading, towing improperly, or attaching unauthorised items is not permitted and driving in a manner that causes these types of damage can impact on coverage. Off-road driving, driving through water, or entering car parks with low clearance is also banned. Only authorised drivers may operate the vehicle, and it must not be used for racing, carrying passengers or cargo for payment, or committing unlawful acts. Smoking, fitting unauthorised equipment, or driving in restricted or unsafe areas such as beaches, and fire trails is not allowed. Where driving in snowy regions is permitted, snow chains must be fitted and adjusted properly, and hubcaps removed to avoid damage. Repairs require prior written approval from SIXT. Improper use may void coverage and loss damage waivers and leave the renter liable for the entire costs of any damage. Please see the SIXT Rental Agreement for detailed coverage on prohibited uses and driving restrictions for SIXT rental vehicles.

Unless you have prior written consent from SIXT, you must never take the vehicle:

  • on any unsealed road unless it is a 4WD vehicle which has a transfer case with an independent Low range and Hi range gearing capability and all terrain tyres as confirmed by the hiring location;

  • in any area above the snow line, where snow chains are required unless you have purchased Snow Pass;

  • off road including driving on beaches or through streams, dams, rivers or flood water;

  • in any airside area of an airport including but not limited to an area beyond security screening, runways, taxiways, tarmacs, aircraft operations areas, airside security zone or areas where ground support vehicles operate;

  • between mainland Australia and Tasmania in either direction;

  • across state borders into or out of the Northern Territory or Western Australia;

  • into or out of Weipa (Queensland);

  • onto any island with the exception of:

    • Kangaroo Island
    • Stradbroke Island
    • Magnetic Island
    • Bribie Island
    • Phillip Island
    • Bruny Island

  • through any river, stream, creek, tidal crossing, flood water or flood prone road on roads that are otherwise unsafe or closed.

  • In the Northern Territory, you may not drive the vehicle outside of any town or city limits between sunset and sunrise.

  • Additional geographical restrictions apply in remote areas of the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia, please see the SIXT Terms and Conditions for further details.

Electric vehicles (EV)

Electric vehicles come with an 80% battery charge when you collect them. To avoid extra fees, make sure you return the vehicle with the same charge level.

Fuel and mileage

If you are unsure what fuel to use, please ask the station attendant or contact the SIXT rental location for advice. SIXT will supply the rental vehicle with a full tank of fuel or an 80% charge level, and expect the vehicle to be returned in the same condition. If you return the vehicle without a full tank of fuel, you will be charged for the refuelling/recharging at a premium rate. Alternatively you can elect to pre-purchase a tank of fuel meaning you will not need to return the SIXT rental car with a full tank of fuel.

Infringements and other fines

SIXT does not pay any infringement notices and it is the sole responsibility of the hirer to pay all fines in relation to infringement notices issued during the rental period. In the event that SIXT receives an infringement notice for a speeding, parking, or other traffic infringement relating to the period the vehicle was on hire, the hirer will be charged an additional administration fee of $66, and the liability for the fine.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

If your driving licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit or an English translation is required. Renters with licences from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

Picking up the vehicle

To pick up a SIXT rental car you need to satisfy both the licence and payment criteria:

  • You must present a valid and accepted credit card or bank issued Mastercard or Visa debit card (see Accepted Forms of Payment above).

  • You must meet the licence rules.

  • For security purposes, the owner of the credit card entered on the payment step when making a booking must be present to collect the vehicle and is required to sign the Rental Agreement.

If you are going to be late to pick up your car, please contact SIXT as soon as possible.

Rental vehicle excess

SIXT vehicles are covered by standard motor vehicle insurance; however, an excess of $6,050 to $8,250 depending on the vehicle type may be charged for any loss or damage incurred during the hire period, regardless of fault. This coverage may not be applicable if the vehicle has been used in a manner in contravention of SIXT Terms and Conditions.

Rental vehicle excess reduction

The rental vehicle excess can be reduced through the purchase of collision damage waiver products that can reduce the excess to a lower level or to zero. See the SIXT Terms and Conditions for details on its waiver products.

Excess insurance is also available through third party providers such as Prosura.

Returning a rental car

After hours pickup and drop off of SIXT rental vehicles may be available — check with the depot concerned, likewise contact the rental location if you wish to extend your rental. In the event of an early return, no refund applies. All hires are counted in 24 hour durations. After a grace period of 59 minutes, late returns of SIXT hire cars will attract a charge for a full additional day of rental.

Roadside assistance

SIXT provides 24/7 emergency roadside assistance for breakdown and accidents. If a roadside assistance callout relates to something that is your fault (for example running out of fuel, losing the keys, locking the keys in the vehicle, or if a wheel needs to be changed due to a puncture), there is a callout fee of $165 associated with roadside assistance. SIXT offers Recovery Plus Protection to cover customers for roadside callouts for at-fault incidents. For any mechanical breakdowns related to a vehicle fault, there is no charge.

Security deposit

The security deposit is a downpayment pre-authorised to your credit card at the commencement of your rental. Deposits range between $300 and $1,000 depending on the vehicle type, pickup location and payment type. All deposits must be paid for by credit card.

Tolls

SIXT has partnered with Linkt for toll management. This system automatically adds any tolls (plus a $3.30 surcharge per day that a toll road is used) to the renter’s account. If the renter would prefer to pay any tolls directly, they can use their own tags in the SIXT hire car.

Young drivers

SIXT charges a Young Driver levy for drivers under the age of 25.
