Hertz T&Cs at a glance

Accepted forms of payment

Hertz accepts Amex, China Union Pay, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards and Mastercard and Visa debit cards. Hertz does not accept Discovery and Diners cards, China Union Pay debit cards, cards presented on phones/watches including Apple Pay, contactless payment methods such as pay-wave, nor does Hertz accept cheques. Cash is accepted at selected locations, but even when accepted a valid credit or debit card is required for the bond.

Additional fees

Hertz may levy an additional charge for any of the following (though not limited to) cases:

  • Additional drivers

  • Child seats

  • Additional roadside assistance coverage

  • Premium location fees

Additional driver

Hertz allows additional drivers charged at $5.50 per day (including GST) capped at five days of charge, and Hertz will also include the renter’s spouse or a person living at the same home address as the primary renter at no additional charge (licence address must be the same as renters). Note that any additional nominated driver, as with the primary driver, must have a full drivers licence and be present when the vehicle is collected at the beginning of the rental period.

Age restrictions

The minimum age for renting a hire car with Hertz is 21 years old, and while there is no maximum age, Hertz recommends that drivers over the age of 75 have a medical certificate indicating they are fit to drive, and renting to drivers over the age of 75 is at the discretion of the depot.

Hertz applies a Young Driver surcharge for drivers under the age of 25 of $16.50 (including GST) per day per driver, capped at seven days for every 30 days of rental.

Animals

Hertz allows service animals in the rental vehicle. Any other pets or animals are not allowed without written permission.

As with all rentals, additional cleaning fees and an administrative fee may be charged in the event the interior of the vehicle requires unusual or unexpected vacuuming, sanitation or shampooing.

Cancellations

If you cancel your Hertz booking through a no show, or even with prior notice, depending on the payment method selected, there may be a cancellation charge applied.

Child seats and GPS

Hertz can provide baby seats, and booster seats. These conform to Australian government standards, and as supplies are limited, please order a child seat at the time of your reservation, stating the age of your child so the correct type of child seat can be booked. Child seats will be provided with the vehicle at the time of collection and are usually fitted by Hertz prior to pick-up, however you may need to make final adjustments to ensure straps are fitted correctly for your child.

A maximum of two child seats or one seat and one booster seat can be fitted to any vehicle, and Adrenaline & Dream Collection vehicles cannot be fitted with child seats.

Child seats are charged at $22 (including GST) per day per seat with a maximum charge of $88.

Credit and debit card surcharges

A 1.35% merchant fee (including GST) is applied to all credit and debit card payments.

Damage to/loss of rental vehicle

In the unfortunate event of an accident:

  • If there are injured people, contact emergency services first.

  • Contact Hertz with relevant information including the licence plate, make and model, colour (if known), nature of fault, precise location of vehicle, contact number, and whereabouts of keys.

  • Prepare a written accident/damage report

  • Submit the report to Hertz.

Digital licences

Hertz requires all customers to supply their hard copy licence even if they have a digital driving licence from New South Wales or South Australia.

Driving in snow

Only specific types of Hertz vehicles are permitted to be driven in alpine regions — please see the Hertz Terms and Conditions for further details.

Driving licence requirements

Hertz requires that all drivers have held a full and unrestricted licence for at least 12 months, and present a valid photo ID such as a passport or government-issued photo ID. Learner permits are not accepted. Renters in Tasmania must have held a full drivers licence for at least three years and not be on a provisional licence. Provisional licences are not accepted in Tasmania.

All licences must be original — copies are not accepted.

If the driving licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit or approved English translation is required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Renters with licences from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

Renters from China can use a China Notarial Certificate (CNC) in place of an International Driving Permit, however their original Chinese licence MUST accompany the driver as well as the CNC. Drivers licences issued by the People’s Republic of China may be accepted provided you present an official Hertz Translation Certification. The Certification is valid until the expiry date of the China Drivers licence. Both the Certification and the original China Drivers licence must be produced at the time of rental.

Driving restrictions

Hertz prohibits using its vehicles in ways that risk damage, violate the law, or breach safety standards. This includes reckless driving, driving under the influence, using the wrong fuel, or ignoring warning lights and signals. Causing damage to the roof, undercarriage, windscreen line, or from overloading, towing improperly, or attaching unauthorised items is not permitted and driving in a manner that causes these types of damage can impact on coverage. Off-road driving, driving through water, or entering car parks with low clearance is also banned.

Only authorised drivers may operate the vehicle, and it must not be used for racing, carrying passengers or cargo for payment, or committing unlawful acts. Smoking, fitting unauthorised equipment, or driving in restricted or unsafe areas such as beaches, and fire trails is not allowed. Where driving in snowy regions is permitted, snow chains must be fitted and adjusted properly, and hubcaps removed to avoid damage. Repairs require prior written approval from Hertz.

Improper use may void coverage and loss damage waivers and leave the renter liable for the entire costs of any damage. Please see the Rental Agreement for detailed coverage on prohibited uses and driving restrictions for Hertz rental vehicles.

Electric vehicles (EV)

  • Daily rental rates do not include the cost of electricity required to charge an EV. Hertz will generally provide an EV with up to 90% charge and ask that it is returned with a charge of at least 15%.

  • Hertz EVs have a standard battery capacity and range. The performance of that battery depends on the conditions under which it is operated, which is the responsibility of the driver.

  • The battery charging limit on your EV rental should be set at 90% maximum. This limit should only be increased to 100% in critical circumstances, as doing so can lead to significant battery degradation.

  • Hertz EVs come with two charging cables. It is important to look after both cables and ensure they are returned undamaged with the Vehicle. The cost for each replacement cable is $500 excluding GST.

  • Hertz EVs come with a keycard. You must take good care of this keycard and ensure it is returned undamaged with the vehicle. The cost for a new keycard is $50 excluding GST, which will be charged to you if you lose or damage it.

  • Any underbody or battery damage caused by driving an EV over foreign objects is not covered by LDL or Optional Renter Protection Services, and you will be liable for the full amount of this damage.

  • Hertz will not be responsible for removing any personalisation created in the EV.

  • EVs must not be driven through an automatic car wash; this is a Prohibited Use. Damage that occurs from driving an EV through a car wash is not limited to the LDL or covered by any Optional Rental Protection Services, and you will be liable for all costs associated with damage caused from this Prohibited Use.

Fuel and mileage

If you are unsure what fuel to use, please ask the station attendant or contact the Hertz rental location for advice. Hertz will supply the rental vehicle with a full tank of fuel, and expect the vehicle to be returned in the same condition. If you return the vehicle without a full tank of fuel, you will be charged the refuelling cost plus a service fee. If you have chosen a pre-paid fuel option — Hertz offers both a full tank and half tank prepaid option — then the above is not applicable.

For EVs, you are liable for any reduction in battery charge percentage from when you pick up your EV to when you return it (no refund will be provided if this figure is higher upon return). If the battery level is lower than the departure level, you will be charged a price per kilowatt. If you return the vehicle at 15% battery charge level or less, you will be charged an additional recharging service fee.

Infringements and other fines

Hertz does not pay any infringement notices and it is the sole responsibility of the hirer to pay all fines in relation to infringement notices issued during the rental period. In the event that Hertz receives an infringement notice for a speeding, parking, or other traffic infringement relating to the period the vehicle was on hire, the hirer will be charged an additional administration fee of $55 (including GST), and the liability for the fine.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

If your driving licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit or an English translation is required. Renters with licences from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

Local renter requirements

For renters who live locally (within the greater metropolitan area of the city of pick-up), are a first-time renter with Hertz, and are not a corporate renter, Hertz requires a $500 pre-authorisation on a credit card ($1,000 for prestige and adrenalin vehicles) along with second proof of identity (such as a utility bill dated within two months of the rental) that shows both the driver’s name and address that is identical to those on their licence.

Picking up the vehicle

To pick up a Hertz rental car you need to satisfy both the licence and payment criteria:

  • You must present a valid and accepted credit card or bank issued Mastercard or Visa debit card (see Accepted Forms of Payment above).

  • You must meet the licence rules.

  • For security purposes, the owner of the credit card entered on the payment step when making a booking must be present to collect the vehicle and is required to sign the Rental Agreement.

If you are going to be late to pick up your car, please contact Hertz as soon as possible.

Rental vehicle excess

Hertz vehicles are covered by standard motor vehicle insurance; however, an excess may be charged for any loss or damage incurred during the hire period, regardless of fault. This coverage may not be applicable if the vehicle has been used in a manner in contravention of Hertz Terms and Conditions.

Rental vehicle excess reduction

The rental vehicle excess can be reduced through the purchase of collision damage waiver products. Hertz offers a number of damage waiver products to reduce this financial exposure, in some cases to zero.

Excess insurance is also available through third party providers such as Prosura.

Returning a rental car

After hours pickup and drop off of Hertz vehicles may be available — check with the depot concerned, likewise contact the rental location if you wish to extend your rental. In the event of an early return, no refund applies, and if the return is 24 hours or more earlier than planned, an early return fee of $33 applies. All hires are counted in 24 hour durations. Late returns can attract additional fees, with a grace period of 59 minutes followed by a half day rental charge for up to 119 minutes late and a full day charge for over 120 minutes late.

Roadside assistance

Hertz provides 24/7 emergency roadside assistance for breakdown and accidents. If a roadside assistance callout relates to something that is your fault (for example running out of fuel, losing the keys, locking the keys in the vehicle, or if a wheel needs to be changed due to a puncture), there is a callout fee associated with roadside assistance. For any mechanical breakdowns related to a vehicle fault, there is no charge. A Roadside Protection package can be purchased to remove the callout fee for roadside assistance.

Security deposit

The security deposit is a downpayment pre-authorised to your credit card at the commencement of your rental. The bond amount varies depending on the vehicle and renter type as follows:
All standard vehicle types excluding Adrenaline and Prestige: $200
Commercial vehicles (Melbourne locations): $400
Commercial vehicles (Sydney locations): $550
Local renter: $500 to $1,000 depending on vehicle type

Tolls

Hertz offers a Toll Day Pass that covers all tolls under one flat fee. The charge varies by Australian state as follows (all amounts include GST):
ACT: $12.32
New South Wales: $19.09
Queensland: $13.48
South Australia $12.32
Victoria: $17.33
The fee applied for tolls incurred without the Toll Day Pass is $38.50 (including GST) per toll.

Young drivers

Hertz applies a Young Driver surcharge for drivers under the age of 25 of $16.50 (including GST) per day per driver, capped at seven days for every 30 days of rental.
