Alamo Car Rental T&Cs at a glance

Accepted forms of payment

Alamo accepts all major credit and Mastercard and Visa debit cards. Alamo does not accept cards presented on phones/watches and doesn’t allow contactless payment methods such as pay-wave, nor does Alamo accept prepaid or reloadable stored value cards, travel money cards, or an EFTPOS card. You must present a physical card when collecting your rental car.

Additional fees

Alamo may levy an additional charge for any of the following (though not limited to) cases:

  • Additional drivers

  • Additional roadside assistance coverage

  • Child seats

  • Young drivers

Additional driver

Alamo allows additional drivers, for a $11 surcharge per driver per day (including GST). Alamo will include the renter’s spouse or a person living at the same home address as the renter at no additional charge (licence address must be the same as that of the primary renter). Note that any additional nominated driver, as with the primary driver, must have a full drivers licence and be present when the vehicle is collected at the beginning of the rental period.

Age restrictions

The minimum age for renting a hire car with Alamo is 21 years old and there is a Young Driver surcharge for drivers under the age of 25 of $23.50 per day, excluding GST. Drivers under the age of 25 are restricted to Compact, Compact SUV, Compact Commercial Van, Economy, Intermediate, Intermediate pickup, Mini, and Standard vehicles only.

For Elite Full Size 4WD, Luxury, Luxury full size, Premium Elite SUV, Premium SUV, and Luxury SUV vehicles, the minimum driver age is 30.

Alamo does not impose a surcharge for senior drivers, nor does it have a maximum age limit.

All drivers, including young drivers, must have held their licence for at least one year.

Child seats and GPS

Alamo can provide child and toddler seats, baby seats, and booster seats. These all conform to government standards, and as supplies are limited, please order a child seat at the time of your reservation, stating the age of your child so the correct type of child seat can be booked. Please check that the restraint is installed to your requirements before driving off, as Alamo does not take any responsibility for incorrect fitting.

Credit and debit card surcharges

Merchant fees paid by a valid credit/debit card will be subject to a credit card surcharge of 0.8%.

Damage to/loss of rental vehicle

In the unfortunate event of an accident:

  • If there are injured people, contact emergency services first.

  • Contact Alamo roadside assistance with relevant information including the licence plate, make and model, colour (if known), nature of fault, precise location of vehicle, contact number, and whereabouts of keys.

  • Prepare a written accident/damage report

  • Submit the report to Alamo.

Digital licences

Alamo accepts digital driver licences as long as the phone app is built in compliance with the ISO/IEC 18013-5 international standard. Alamo advises customers who are unsure about whether their digital licence would be accepted to bring their physical licence with them.

Driving in snow

Alamo does not permit the use of the vehicle in snow or ice conditions or above the snow line during periods of snow.

Driving licence requirements

Alamo requires that all drivers have held their licence for at least 12 months, and present a valid photo ID such as a passport or government-issued photo ID.

If the driving licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation is required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Renters with licences from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

Driving restrictions

Alamo prohibits using its vehicles in ways that risk damage, violate the law, or breach safety standards. This includes reckless driving, driving under the influence, using the wrong fuel, or ignoring warning lights and signals. Causing damage to the roof, undercarriage, windscreen line, or from overloading, towing improperly, or attaching unauthorised items is not permitted and driving in a manner that causes these types of damage can impact on coverage. Off-road driving, driving through water, or entering car parks with low clearance is also banned.

Only authorised drivers may operate the vehicle, and it must not be used for racing, carrying passengers or cargo for payment, or committing unlawful acts. Smoking, fitting unauthorised equipment, or driving in restricted or unsafe areas such as beaches, and fire trails is not allowed. Where driving in snowy regions is permitted, snow chains must be fitted and adjusted properly, and hubcaps removed to avoid damage. Repairs require prior written approval from Alamo.

Improper use may void coverage and loss damage waivers and leave the renter liable for the entire costs of any damage. Please see the Rental Agreement for detailed coverage on prohibited uses and driving restrictions for Alamo rental vehicles.

Alamo vehicles must not be driven on beaches, through streams, rivers or flood waters; nor

  • on fire trails;

  • in the snow;

  • to enter in to, or leave, the Northern Territory, Western Australia or Tasmania;

  • or outside the Permitted Area of Use, listed below.

Nearby renters

If the customer lives locally (within the greater metropolitan area of the city of pick-up), is a first-time renter from Alamo (in Australia), and is not a corporate renter, a $1,000 pre-authorisation is required on a credit card (no debit cards), along with second proof of ID that shows the driver’s name and identical address to the driver’s licence, for example a utility bill, which must be dated within two months of the rental.

Fuel and mileage

If you are unsure what fuel to use, please ask the station attendant or contact the Alamo rental location for advice. Alamo will supply the rental vehicle with a full tank of fuel, and expect the vehicle to be returned in the same condition. If you return the vehicle without a full tank of fuel, Alamo will charge you the refuelling cost along with a surcharge fee. If you have chosen a pre-paid fuel option, then the above is not applicable.

Infringements and other fines

Alamo does not pay any infringement notices and it is the sole responsibility of the hirer to pay all fines in relation to infringement notices issued during the rental period. In the event that Alamo receives an infringement notice for a speeding, parking, or other traffic infringement relating to the period the vehicle was on hire, Alamo charges the hirer an additional administration fee, and will transfer the liability to the driver.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

If your driving licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit or an English translation is required. Renters with licences from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

Picking up the vehicle

To pick up an Alamo rental car you need to satisfy both the licence and payment criteria:

  • You must present a valid and accepted credit card or bank issued Mastercard or Visa debit card (see Accepted Forms of Payment above).

  • You must meet the licence rules.

  • For security purposes, the owner of the credit card entered on the payment step when making a booking must be present to collect the vehicle and is required to sign the Rental Agreement.

If you are going to be late to pick up your car, please contact Alamo as soon as possible.

Rental vehicle excess

Alamo rental vehicles are covered by standard motor vehicle insurance; however, an excess may be charged for any loss or damage incurred during the hire period, regardless of fault. This coverage may not be applicable if the vehicle has been used in a manner in contravention of the Alamo Terms and Conditions.

Rental vehicle excess reduction

The rental vehicle excess can be reduced through the purchase of collision damage waiver products as follows:

  • Standard passenger vehicles: $1,950.

  • Standard 8 - 12 seat minivans, and standard to large 4WDs: $2,750.

  • All mine spec and commercial trucks, vans, electrics vehicles, 4WDs and utilities: $3,750.

Excess insurance is also available through third party providers such as Prosura.

Returning a rental car

Contact the Alamo rental location if you wish to extend your rental. In the event of an early return, no refund applies. All hires are counted in 24 hour durations, and in the event of a late return, supplementary fees may apply.

Roadside assistance

Alamo provides 24/7 emergency roadside assistance for breakdown and accidents. If a roadside assistance callout relates to something that is your fault (for example running out of fuel, losing the keys, locking the keys in the vehicle, or if a wheel needs to be changed due to a puncture), there is a callout fee associated with roadside assistance. For any mechanical breakdowns related to a vehicle fault, there is no charge.

Security deposit

The security deposit is a downpayment pre-authorised to your credit card at the commencement of your rental. Alamo does not accept debit cards for the security bond. The amount of the security deposit varies depending on the vehicle type as follows:

Passenger Fleet: $200
Commercial Fleet: $500
Prestige Fleet: $1,000
Local Renter: $1,000

Alamo will refund the bond amount upon return of the undamaged vehicle, and if no charges are processed by Alamo your bank will release the hold on your funds after a period of up to 28 days.

If the customer lives nearby the Alamo depot, different conditions hold regarding the security deposit — please see the Nearby Renters section above for more information.

Tolls

Every Alamo rental vehicle is fitted with an electronic toll pass. If you travel through a toll collection point, your credit card will be charged for both the toll and a toll administration fee.

Young drivers

Alamo levies a Young Driver fee for drivers under the age of 25 of $23.50 per driver per day. Drivers under the age of 25 are restricted to Compact, Compact SUV, Compact Commercial Van, Economy, Intermediate, Intermediate pickup, Mini, and Standard vehicles only.
