Taking a rental car into alpine regions

Alpine rental restrictions

If you’re planning on driving your rental car to Australia’s alpine regions, it is important to consider your rental provider’s rules and regulations by checking your rental agreement. Generally, there will be restrictions concerning alpine travel.

Snow chains

Some rental providers don’t allow their vehicles to be taken into snowy areas without permission. If you’ve been approved to take your rental car above the snow line, it’s important that you fit the car with snow chains.

Additional insurance

The standard excess reduction products offered at the rental counter may not cover your rental car for snow travel. Some rental providers will require you to purchase additional insurance products for this. Additionally, not all vehicle types can be taken into the snow.

Restricted areas

Unless authorised by your rental provider, you will not be permitted to drive your rental car past the snow line in Jindabyne in New South Wales or Bright in Victoria.

Protection options from car rental companies

Renting a car for snow travel can be a little bit confusing. Some providers have different rates, Terms and Conditions, and exceptions when it comes to driving their vehicles in areas labelled “snow zones.” It’s best to check with your rental provider around their protection options for driving in the snow.
