Can I return my rental car out of hours?

Returning rental after hours

If you’re planning on returning your vehicle out of hours, you will need to have prior approval to do so. If the time you want to return the vehicle is showing as available in our comparison results, you can proceed with your booking. We will confirm your booking with the supplier directly.

When you return the vehicle to the depot out of hours, make sure you park it in the designated car park and lock the vehicle. Generally, you will find a key box where you can leave the keys. It is a good idea to check this with the depot when you pick up the car, and ask them about their out-of-hours returns process. Make sure you take all of your belongings with you, as there may be a charge for returning your items by post.

As there will not be a car rental representative there to check for damage, the vehicle will be checked the following day. You are responsible for any damage that occurs to the vehicle until the staff have checked the vehicle.

Note that some suppliers, and certain locations, may not permit out of hours returns.

For example:

David wants to return his rental car out of hours

David has a confirmed booking with VroomVroomVroom, that allows him to drop his rental car back to the depot out of hours. After filling his car with fuel, he returns the car to the car rental parking lot. He completes his return details form and leaves it on the passenger seat of the car. After gathering all of his belongings, David locks the car and takes the keys to the key box. He drops the keys in the box and leaves the depot. David will now receive further communication from the car rental company after they have had an opportunity to check for damage, and to see if there are any outstanding charges.
