Car rental kilometre limits in Australia

Kilometre limits

In some cases, kilometre limits may apply to your car rental booking in Australia. Particularly in outback areas, car rental companies often enforce a limit on the amount of kilometres you can travel per day. If you exceed these limits, you’ll generally be charged a fee for each kilometre you travel over the specified limit.

Where do kilometre limits generally apply?

Commonly, kilometre limits are applied to car rental bookings in outback areas in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Terms and Conditions can differ per location, so it is important to check your rental agreement.

As a general guide, limits of 100 kilometres per day are sometimes applied to rental cars picked up from locations such as Darwin, Alice Springs, Uluru / Ayers Rock and Broome.

How much will I be charged if I exceed the kilometre limit?

For each kilometre you travel over the specified limit, you will be charged. This amount differs according to which car rental company you have hired your car with, but the amount generally ranges from $0.25 - $0.37 per each additional kilometre. This amount is subject to local taxes and surcharges.
