Do you pay for toll roads when renting a campervan?

By Vroom Team • Reviewed 07 Nov 2025

Are there toll roads along your campervan route? If there are, make sure to read up on your campervan rental provider’s policy on using toll roads and explore their available payment methods before you embark on your road trip.

Only three cities in Australia have toll roads: Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, and as with hiring a regular vehicle, you’re responsible for paying toll charges when renting a campervan or motorhome, though the rate may vary depending on its vehicle class, and your rental provider's policies. Toll fees in Australia are paid electronically through e-Tags and passes, which means you can’t pay with cash when using toll roads. Before finalising your booking, be sure to check your campervan or motorhome rental provider's policies on using toll roads.

Do I need to pay for any road tolls when driving a rental campervan?

Yes, you’ll be liable for any tolls associated with the use of toll roads in Australia, with the charges levied electronically using e-Tags. Some providers offer toll packages, where, for a set daily fee, you can use toll roads as you please without needing to worry about being charged for the toll later. If you choose not to do this, your campervan provider will charge you for any tolls they receive, often with an administrative fee added to each toll.

An exception to this is Camperman’s all-inclusive rental rate, which implies that your toll charges are covered by the provider administration fee you pay at the beginning of your rental. In return, the provider has equipped all their rental vehicles with a toll token that automatically pays for tolls as you pass through.

Do campervan rental providers charge extra toll fees?

Yes, providers may charge you for handling toll-related charges, whether you use e-Tags, toll passes, or pay for toll yourself. There are four primary ways campervan providers handle tolls and toll payment, namely:

  • The campervan provider covers all costs associated with tolls.

  • The campervan provider offers a toll pass which covers all tolls for a per-day charge.

  • The campervan is fitted with e-Tags, meaning the toll cost is charged to the renter’s credit card, along with a per-toll surcharge.

  • The customer is expected to register for tolls themselves through Linkt and failure to do so (meaning any toll is charged to the provider) can result in hefty surcharges by the provider.

Review your provider’s Terms and Conditions when hiring a campervan to clarify what their approach is for toll fees and to avoid the double-payment of tolls.

How much do toll charges cost when driving a campervan?

Toll charges depend on your campervan’s vehicle class, the distance, and time of day you’re using a toll road. As some campervans and motorhomes are larger and heavier than regular cars, the toll charges can be higher than for regular cars.

Vehicle class standards vary between states and each has provided a guide to help drivers determine their car’s vehicle class:

Where are the toll roads in Australia?

Most Australian toll roads are located in Sydney, but you will encounter some in Queensland, Victoria, and other parts of New South Wales. A fixed toll rate applies to each vehicle class, so be sure that you confirm with your provider how much the toll charge will be for your campervan or motorhome rental.

Toll roads in Sydney

Sydney has the largest number of toll roads in Australia. With 13 motorways and tunnels, many covering important trunk routes in and out of the city, the cost of tolls in Sydney can be very high, so it is important that you’re familiar with the toll policy of your campervan provider.

Here is a summary of the estimated Sydney toll rates by vehicle class. These rates are based on the end-to-end distances of each toll road. To check the toll charges applicable to your vehicle and route, use Linkt’s Sydney toll calculator.
