Keep Your Child Safe – Use The Perfect Baby Seat For Your Little One

Parents making sure their little is okay while on the baby seat

The safety of their child is something every parent must consider when travelling by car. When you reserve your car hire, keep in mind that there are laws in each state and territory in Australia which regulate the kind of baby seat to use for children ages 0 to 16 years.

Your child must face rearward until he or she is six months old, but some experts believe that you should continue doing that until your child is at least seven years old. Make sure your child stays in the back seat since that's the safest place in the car.

Children below seven years old should never sit in the front unless there are other kids in the vehicle who are younger than your child. Keep in mind to always use the right car seat for your child.

With a wide selection of child seats available in the market right now, some parents get overwhelmed by the choices and end up buying or renting the wrong car seat. To help you choose the perfect car seat for your child, check out the guide below:

Child Car Seat Guide

Age Type of Child Seat
rear facing car seat
0 to 6 months

Your baby must be placed in an approved rearward-facing child seat like an infant capsule or a convertible car seat that is specially designed for newborns.

The car restraint should also have a harness built in.

PLEASE NOTE: Capsules are not available from car rental companies - only rear facing safety seats.

forward facing car seat
6 months to 4 years old

Your baby or toddler must be restrained in an approved rearward-facing or forward-facing child restraint.

It also should have a built-in harness.

booster seat
4 to 7 years old

Your child must be seated in an approved forward-facing child restraint with harness or a booster seat that has an adjustable seat belt with harness.

Make sure the booster is also properly fastened.

seat belt
7 to 16 years old

Even if your child is almost a grown-up, he or she still needs to use a booster seat or an adult seat belt that is properly fastened and adjusted.

What to Consider When Renting a Child Car Seat or Booster Seat

Although most car hire agencies offer car seats for rent, bring your own wherever possible, whether traveling domestically or internationally especially to developing countries. This avoids issues with seat availability and quality from the rental car agency. Always remember to bring the base part of an infant car seat with you -- it's not required but is easy to check in with carry-on luggage and means your child's seat can be safely installed in a rental car.

PLEASE NOTE: In years past, some airlines have allowed safety seats free of the baggage limits.

If You Need to Book a Baby Seat or Child Seat for Your Car Hire

If you do intend to rent a car seat, make sure to request the car seat in advance. Specify the type of car seat (infant, regular, booster) needed. Car rental suppliers do not install the car seat, but rather they will put the safety seat into the car and latch it to the anchor. The seat will be in the vehicle, latched onto the anchor point. Parents must adjust all straps to the correct fitting size of the child.

If you have reserved a hire car without requesting a baby seat, you can contact our customer care team. Be sure to advise the ages of the children who are travelling.

Car seat safety standards are very stringent in Australia, the U.K. and Europe. There are also several states in the USA that have child restraint requirement. Check out the table from GHSA to know more about it. If you can confirm the availability of a rental car seat in advance, using this may be better than taking your own, since your Australian car seat may not meet local safety laws.

Remember child safety should come first when travelling! Coordinate with your car rental supplier, or contact our friendly VroomVroomVroom customer care experts, to make sure that you and your family are equipped with everything you need for the road trip.
