Why you need a hire car in Vanuatu
Hiring a rental car might not be the first thing that pops into your mind when you’re thinking about a holiday to Vanuatu, but with the main island of Efate being roughly circular, the island is a great spot to explore by hire car. With a rental car you’ll be able to not only travel at your own pace, but you’ll also be far better able to explore more of what the island has to offer.
When it comes to picking the right rental car for your road trip, VroomVroomVroom is here to help make your decision as easy as possible. From a compact car ideal for a solo traveller or couple, through to a larger hire car that would be perfect for a group or family holiday, we can help you find the right vehicle at the right price — and the whole process can take as little as two minutes.
Rental tips for hiring a car in Vanuatu
If you’ve rented a car elsewhere in the world, renting a car in Vanuatu isn’t that different, but there are a few points to keep in mind. Here’s ten of the important ones.
In Vanuatu you drive on the right side of the road.
If your licence is not in English, you will need an International driving licence.
Road quality in Vanuatu can be variable and it is important to keep your attention on the road at all times.
In Vanuatu the law requires that the driver and all passengers wear a seatbelt at all times. Children must use a child seat or restraint.
In most cases you need to be at least 23 years old and have had a full, unrestricted, licence for at least one year to rent a car in Vanuatu.
Vanuatu has two main speed limits. In urban and town areas the limit is 50 km/h and on the open road the speed limit is 80 km/h, though there may be reductions in both cases related to road conditions.
Rental cars in Vanuatu come with insurance, but in the case of damage or if your rental vehicle is stolen, you’ll be liable for an excess.
Using a mobile phone with your hand while driving is illegal in Vanuatu. Your phone must be mounted in a dock or another hands-free manner.
Vanuatu has no blood alcohol limit for alcohol consumption when driving, but drivers under the influence can be stopped and fined by the police.
Driving practices in Vanuatu may differ from what you are used to in your home country. Pay attention to the road and always yield to vehicles larger than your own.
Where in Vanuatu would you like to rent a car?
Vanuatu’s international gateway is Port Vila on the island of Efate, and rental cars are available for collection at both the airport and in Port Vila City. As the island is roughly circular in shape, with Port Vila on the southwest coast, the airport is the perfect place to pick up your car to circumnavigate the island.
