Rental tips for hiring a car in Fiji
If you’ve rented a car elsewhere in the world, renting a car in Fiji isn’t that different, but there are a few points to keep in mind. Here’s ten of the important ones.
In Fiji you drive on the left side of the road.
If your licence is not in English, you will need an International driving licence.
Watch out for wildlife when driving in Fiji. Both dogs and cattle can stray onto the road. Always keep your eyes on the road.
In Fiji the law requires the driver and passenger in the front seat to wear a seatbelt. There is no legal requirement for children and toddlers to use special seating. In both cases it is prudent to use seat belts and/or a child seat.
In most cases you need to be at least 21 years old and have had a full, unrestricted, licence for at least two years to rent a car in Fiji. Some providers may require a minimum age of 25.
The speed limit in Fiji is 50 km/h in urban areas and 80 km/h on the open road.
Rental cars in Fiji come with insurance, but in the case of damage or if your rental vehicle is stolen, you’ll be liable for an excess.
Using a mobile phone with your hand while driving is illegal in Fiji. Your phone must be mounted in a dock or another hands-free manner.
Driving a hire car under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a serious offence in Fiji. The legal limit is a blood alcohol level of 0.035 and penalties for breaking this limit can result in heavy fines and/or the loss of your licence.
You are not permitted to take a rental vehicle off-road in Fiji. Please be aware while driving as driving practices in Fiji may differ from your home country.

Deciding where is the best place to rent a hire car in Fiji will be determined by where you are going. The two most popular islands to rent a car in Fiji are on the main island of Fiji, and the smaller island of Vanua Levu.
Fiji Island has two airports, Suva Nausori which serves the Suva in the east of the island, and Nadi International Airport which serves Nadi and the island’s west. Other popular locations to rent a car on the main island include Denarau (near Nadi), and the Coral Coast and Sigatoka on Fiji’s south coast.
On Vanua Levu, Labasa lies on the north coast and Savusavu on the south coast. Both have domestic airports, meaning you can fly in, collect your car, and start exploring.
