Atherton at its Finest
The surrounds are epically magnificent and the service will leave you breathless. From fresh hot bread in the morning, to trips to nearby waterfalls, the experience at Allawah is absolute.
Once you've gotten used to the late sleep- ins, and are looking for some outback adventure, be sure to check in with your hosts to get the most out of Atherton.
Nearby, there are a surprising amount of fantastic attractions to keep your undivided attention.
Crowd pleasers include the local waterfalls and lakes, plus farms that can show you local produce and how it's made.
Lake Tinaroo, Lake Euramoo, Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine are favourites; you can have a picnic by the shore, or take a boat out for a casual sail on a sunny afternoon.
Lake Tinaroo is open all year for Baramundi fishing, and is part of a fish stocking scheme, which means you will need a small permit. They cost $7 per week for a couple, children under 18 are free, and the permits can be bought from the caravan park shop at Lake Tinaroo township (where bait is also for sale). You can hire a boat or take a fishing tour.
Lake Euramoo, a crater lake, has a viewing platform in the rain forest nearby. You can walk through to the platform on a circuit walk that takes about thirty minutes for a 600 metre trek.
The Millaa Millaa Falls circuit is a breathtaking trip and well worth the effort of the journey there. The waterfall circuit consists of The Millaa Millaa Falls, Millstream Falls, Davies Creek and Emerald Creek Falls in near range to each other.
Atherton also has fantastic day trips like bird watching at the Hastie swamp, the Mareeba Tropical Savannah Wetlands, and the Bromfield Swamp.
You can check out rain forest giants like the Curtain fig tree, Giant Red Cedar and Cathedral Fig and visit farms at Mungalli Creek that allow you to taste tropical fruit and exotic cheeses in their boutique factory.
Atherton is also famous for coffee and tea, as nearby Mereeba has 75% of Australia's coffee growth, a huge accomplishment.
But if none of these things are your style, your gracious hosts at the Allawah Retreat can point you in the right direction.
