What are car rental scams?

There are a number of scams about which someone about to rent a car should be aware. Most of these scams will be from rental companies that are not major name businesses who are trying to lure you to use them. Especially noted for scams are companies renting vehicles at much lower rates than competitors' advertised prices.
This can often mean that the cost will actually be higher than the highest price you see advertised after all the other expenses involved in renting the car are tabulated. Be aware that state and local taxes are added and that vehicle insurance that may already be covered by your own private car insurance may also be added into the contract. You should always check with your own insurance company to find out your coverage on rental vehicles before, in effect, doubling coverage that is superfluous from the car rental agency.

Another problem when looking for discounts is that often these rental companies will offer older cars. These cars are going to have flaws, both inside and out. You will be liable for any damages that you incur yourself, but make sure that you note on the rental agreement any dents, upholstery stains, and any other imperfections that may be less noticeable but might be attributed to you if you do not call attention to them before driving away.
