Kangaroo Island is one of the largest islands found in Australia, and it is located 112 kilometres south-west of Adelaide. During the Aboriginals, Kangaroo Island was known as Karta, Island of the Dead, due to its considerable distance from the shore. As Kangaroo Island is surrounded by fertile lands and rich waters, it has become one of the best providers of fine gourmet foods. Besides the wonderful landscapes, you will find here all the ingredients necessary for a relaxing holiday: history, art and a wide array of fine wines. In terms of accommodation, you have plenty to choose from: outdoor camping areas, cozy cottages or fancy retreats.
Top Attractions Within Kangaroo Island
Raptor Domain is an extraordinary educational, entertaining and interactive experience, great for the whole family. Both children and adults can admire the abilities of prey birds. It is a rare opportunity to get close to these amazing predators and learn more about their role in the environment.
Seal Bay Conservation Park is one of the few Australian Sea Lions colonies available to open public. You can observe them lazily laying in the sun, after having eaten a healthy meal. The park rangers are always willing to give tourists a guided walk on the beach. There are also galleries where you can learn more about the sea creatures, by means of vivid descriptions and pictures. Also in the complex, tourists can visit the old lighthouse, see the unique earthly formations or the wonderful beach.
Little Sahara. If you have never been to the Sahara Dessert, now you have the chance to see what it feels like to walk under the scorching sun. You can climb up to the top of the dunes, or take a sand board and ride down to bottom in style.
For the adventurers, there are other possibilities of having a great time in Kangaroo Island: you can choose a cruise around the island, or visit the system of caverns and the sink-holes, or simply rent a bicycle and go around the island. You can see the main attractions and get a serious workout from it in the same time.
The next morning the alarm was set early to head down to meet the ferry in Port Jervis that would take us to Kangaroo Island. This was the first time to KI and I was getting more excited as the morning went on.
All you need to know about Kangaroo Island
As we continued to travel across the island we could see just what a perfect environment this was. Due to its location and isolation it is one of the most pristine environments in Australia. The air has no smog and is cleaned by the winds of “the Straight”. Big business and mass tourism have left the island alone which makes for a rare experience.
