Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Preston
Having a headache on deciding on what place to crash this summer? Well, well, well, if you want to experience a different taste in life, Preston in Melbourne, Australia is waiting for you!
Preston is a suburb in Melbourne, Australia, and is about 9 kilometers from the northern area of Melbourne’s central business district. Preston has a population of 27,892 and its Local Government Area is the City of Darebin. Preston’s original name was Irishtown.
The area presently occupied by Preston was first surveyed by Robert Hoddle in 1837 for sub-division. In 1850, a settler from Sussex, England named Edward Wood, opened a store at the corner of High Street and Wood Street. And after that establishment, churches, hotels, other stores, and schools emerged around the area.
During its formative years, Preston relied on its abundance of fertile land for farming, dairy, and market gardens. After some time in 1862, Preston’s industrial capacity boomed because of the many factories that were established. And throughout the 1880s, Preston was marketed as a residential area which is capable of supporting 20,000 inhabitants.
Preston is bordered to the east by the Darebin Creek which is largely of flat terrain initially for farming, but later for industrial and residential development. The original abundance of land resulted to low density urban development of Preston’s former farmland but recently has inclined from medium to high-density urban development.
Together with Preston’s economic growth, its tourism industry has also developed.
1. The Preston MarketThe Preston Market has been successfully running for over 40 years and is still one of Melbourne’s traditional markets.
The market opened in 1970 and has grown to house over 130 stores! With its huge range of food, fashion, general specialty shops, free parking and trams, and trains and buses; Preston Market has everything for you!
The market’s atmosphere is unique with a diverse mix of traders and multi-cultural performers playing on every corner! The market is noisy but that “noise” is part of the experience as the market traders compete with each other and shouting their prices and bargains. The “noise” is part of the market’s essence.
Preston Market is not your ordinary market; it’s a place where you’ll have a glimpse of Preston’s trading industry in the 1970s.
2. The Olympic Hotel and BistroJust 15 minutes away from Melbourne’s central business district, the Olympic Hotel and Bistro offers a range of award winning facilities! It was originally built in 1956 for the Olympic Games. And until now, it embraces the Olympic spirit and at the same time, it’s the best place in the Northern suburbs to dine or to just simply relax with family and friends!
