Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Paraburdoo

Another trip to Western Australia —the place where you’ll truly enjoy an outback life! One of the many ideal places to visit in Western Australia is the darling town of Parabudoo.

Paraburdoo is a town located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The name of the town was derived from the Aboriginal word “Pirupardu” which means “meat feathers”, and is because of the high population of cockatoos in the area. About 1,536 kilometers from the northern area of Perth and about 79 kilometers southwest of Tom Price, Paraburdoo was developed in the early 1970s. The objective is to support Hamerly Iron’s local iron ore mining operations. And in 1972, Paraburdoo was gazetted as a town.

Most of the town’s residents are employed by Pilbara Iron’s mining operation and the supporting services. The town also provides housing to workers of the three nearby Rio Tinto mines —the Channar, the Eastern Range, and the Paraburdoo mine.

Western Australia is rich of natural attractions. And Paraburdoo is another of the many places in Western Australia that has majestic wonders of nature.

1. The Karijini National Park

The Karijini National Park is considered as one of the largest national parks and one of the most spectacular in Western Australia!

The park is best accessed by joining a four wheel drive tour.

The park is famous for its sheer gorges, waterfall, and cool swimming holes. There are also excellent walking trails of varying levels —from beginner to adventurous— are found in the park. And these walking trails could lead you to subterranean gorges and through waterfalls where you can enjoy a cool swim in into crystal clear rock pools!

Once in the park, you should not miss Dale’s Gorge. Here, you’ll find the beautiful Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool, which has been described as “one of the prettiest settings n Karijini”! The area is covered with dense, tropical vegetation, and is surrounded by gorge walls abundant in iron ore that are red and purple in color.

The park also beautifully located picnic areas as well as allocated camping sites!

The Karijini National Park is not just for adventurous people, it’s also a wonderful place to enjoy with your family and friends!

2. The Radio Hill Lookout
