Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Onslow
Tired of going into barren areas? Then why not have a U-turn and head up to the coasts?! Enjoy an exciting day and a half road trip from the city of Perth to the darling coastal town of Onslow!
Onslow is a coastal town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and is about 1,386 kilometers north of Perth. Onslow has a population of about 573 and is included in the Shire of Ashburton’s Local Government Area.
Originally founded in 1883, Onslow was a port at the mouth of Ashburton River for exporting wool from the sheep stations of the Pilbara hinterland. Onslow was named after the former Chief Justice of Western Australia, Sir Alexander Campbell Onslow.
Onslow has many tourist destinations waiting for its visitors!
You can have a swim or enjoy the fishing and mud crabbing at Five Mile Pool and Three Mile Pool. If you like camping, well, you can bring your equipments and have a wonderful night under the sparkling stars. And near the mouth of Ashburton, you’ll discover the ruins of the Old Onslow where historic buildings such as the gaol and courthouse, can still be seen. These are only a few of the fun activities that you can enjoy in Onslow. Your favorite Grandpa Benjamin has prepared a list of a few more places where you can indulge and admire the gems of the town of Onslow.
1. The Mackarel IslandOnly 22 kilometers offshore from Onslow, the Mackarel Island will give you an experience of world class diving, snorkeling, and fishing!
The clear blue green waters and the radiant white beaches in Mackarel Island are totally perfect for swimming and relaxing.
Mackarel Island is made up of 10 islands which are home to an unspoiled coral reef that is perfect for dive sites and snorkeling! Your eyes can delight with the many colorful corals and amazing reef fishes! The beaches and the surrounding ocean also provide many ideal fishing spots. And here’s what; many of the islands are totally untouched thus making them refuge to turtles and hundreds of species of birds.
Among the 10 islands, the Thevenard and the Direction Island has accommodation that includes beach front cabins.
In going to Mackarel Island, you can either take regular boat cruises or a charter flight to Thevenard Island.
2. The Old Town SiteOriginally established in 1885 during the gold rush, the Old Town Site of Onslow shows an insight into the lives of the people who first lived in the area. In the site, you’ll see recently restored ruins such as the stone buildings that were once the police station, gaol, post office, and hospital.
But before traveling to the Old Town Site, it would be great if you’d first stop at the Onslow Visitors Centre because it was one of the original buildings of the old town. The Onslow Visitors Centre houses interesting memorabilia and artifacts from the original town site.
3. The Solar Salt FieldOnlow’s Solar Salt Field is constructed on tidal salt flats the surrounds the town where you can enjoy a 1.3 kilometer jetty, a 3.5 kilometer conveyor belt, and stacker equipment where you can have a breathtaking view of the area when lit up at night.
