Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Kununurra

Feeling down and want to unwind? I have a perfect getaway for you adventure buffs! Let’s head to Western Australia and visit the town of Kununurra.

Kununurra is a town in the far northern Western Australia. It is located in the eastern boundary of the Kimberly Region about 37 kilometers from the border of the Northern Territory

Kununurra is the largest town in Western Australia. The town is situated between the picturesque hills and ranges of the northeast Kimberley Region thus, making the town abundant in fresh water. And Kununurra was initiated to service the Ord River Irrigation scheme. Due to being surrounded by beautiful natural creations and ranges, Kununurra’s tourism and mining industry has become important to its local economy.

The town of Kununurra is considered as an untamed, adventurous, and a gateway to some of Western Australia’s most breathtaking natural attractions!

1. The Purnululu National Park

Purnululu is one of Western Australia’s most captivating landmarks. It is also one of the ultimate places to experience an outback adventure! It covers nearly 240,000 hectares and is home to other natural phenomena such as Echidna Chasm, Cathedral Gorge, and the soaring Piccaninny Gorge!

In Purnululu National Park, you can camp under the black velvet sky with sparkling stars like diamonds, have an adrenaline pumping experience while you enjoy the four-wheel driving across rugged terrain, and be in awed while you hike through the beautiful gorges which took millions of years in the making!

In aerial view 300 meters out of the plain, you’ll see the orange and black stripes of the huge sandstone structures! And as you fly over the range, you’ll also have a peek of the hidden world of gorges and pools, with fan palms clinging to walls and gaps in the rocks! (I suggest that you book tours with scenic flights. You’ll extremely love it!)

A nugget of trivia for you. Did you know that despite of being made up of soft sandstone, the range has survived for more than 350 million years!

Now you tell me if Purnululu National Park is not worth a visit.

2. Lake Argyle

A 40-minute drive from Kununurra, the immense Lake Argyle is one of the most magnificent attractions in Western Australia!

Lake Argyle is the largest man-made lake in Australia. (It’s several times larger than Sydney Harbour, and holds up to 32 million cubic meters of water! And it is so huge that it has been classified as an inland sea! Wow!)

In the lake, you can take boat cruises that will take you up close to its varied wildlife such as fresh water crocodiles, fishes, wallabies, and more than 240 species of birds —which is almost one third of Australia’s total known species! But the best way to appreciate this majestic man-made creation is from aerial view because you’ll surely be dumbfounded of how beautiful the lake is.

3. The Argyle Diamond Mine

Want to see a real diamond mine? Then visit another of Kununurra’s amazing attraction: the Argyle Diamond Mine! This diamond mine is not just the largest diamond producer in the world. It is also known for its pink diamonds (producing over 90% of the world’s supply of pink diamonds)! And not only that; Argyle Diamond Mine also provides a large portion of other naturally colored diamonds including champagne, cognac, and rare blue diamonds!

Wow! Wow! Wow! I’m out of words! Kununurra will truly take your breath away!
