Grandpa's Guide to Driving in Esperance
Hello there, mate! Been wanting to leave the city to have an adventure? A vacation, perhaps? Then, Grandpa Ben is here to give you an adventure of a lifetime. Are you a nature lover? Then I have the perfect destination for you, mate! Hold your breath for I will be taking you to Esperance.
If you were born in the 70's then you probably heard of Esperance. Remember the sad fate of the space station Skylab? If you do remember, then you also remember that it crashed onto Esperance after it broke up over the Indian Ocean. The crash of the space station Skylab was such a sensation that it was all over the news.
But if you’ve never heard about Esperance let me tell a few pieces of information just to whet your appetite for an adventure. It is a town in Western Australia. You see, the first people to rediscover Esperance were the French (they are actually the one’s who named it Esperance after their ship) in 1792 while they were sheltering from a storm but the first settlers were the Dempsters who were of Scottish descent. They settled in the area around 1870's. Much has happened to Esperance since then- gold has been discovered, land was developed for agriculture, nature reserves have been sprouting in the area like mushrooms...
Wait! Hold your horses, mate! Are you leaving already? Check a perfect car rental first before you go. You need to have a problem-and-hassle-free car which is very affordable. Can’t think of any car rental that offers a very affordable and problem-and-hassle-free car? Well, I have exactly what you need! Alright! Now you are good to go. So what are you waiting for? Buckle up and enjoy the adventure you have always wanted...
1. Pink LakeSo you have been to a lot of lakes in your lifetime eh? But have you ever been to a pink lake? I bet your answer is no.
The pink lake is not named ‘pink lake’ because one of the first settlers decided to name the lake after her favourite colour. The lakes colour actually is pink. Why is this so? Well, it has something to do with a specific species of green alga and bacteria. And since pink lake is a salt lake and when it becomes very salty (saltier than sea water) and the temperature becomes really high the pink halobacteria (that’s the bacteria I am talking about) starts growing at the bottom of the lake making the lake turn pink.
Now that is a lake worth taking a picture!
2. Cape Le Grand National ParkEver heard of a Blue China Orchid? What about grey kangaroos or legless lizards or blind snakes or quacking frogs or what about a humming frog? Yes? Then it is time for you to see them and take a picture of them so you can show your friends that they are not urban legends and that they actually exist.
3. Cape Arid National ParkThere are so many things you can do here. You can check out the Duke of Orleans bay or the Israelite Bay or the Cape Pasley. You can also check out the ruins of dams, buildings, homesteads and gravesites of the first graziers who arrived in the area around 1870s. Or, if you like, you go camping at Poison Creek and Deal Creek. Just take your pick or you can do all of them!
Now that is some adventure, huh? Go enjoy yourselves but don’t forget to tell me all about your adventures! I'd love to hear from you!
Cheers!
-Grandpa Ben
