Grandpa's Guide to Driving in Collie
Howdy, travellers! Your favorite traveling Grandpa is here again and I will show the perfect destination for a perfect getaway. You ready? I will be taking you to Collie. Oh yes! Collie... you caught me reminiscing there. Let me tell you about the place first, as I also relive my memories there.
Collie is Australia’s most important coal mining town. It calls itself (with an unbridled pride) “The Power Centre of the West”. It got its name from Dr. Alexander Collie who accompanied Captain Stirling in the general reconnaissance of the area to the south of Perth. In the 19th century coal was so vital to the industry that the government at that time offered a free land grant to the first person to discover coal in the colony. So it was no surprise that Collie became the apple to the eye of the government. The first coal was discovered along the Collie River (thus, the town was named Collie).
Whoa! Packing already? That excited, huh? Well, before you leap off to Collie you better have the perfect car rental first. Don’t worry because I have the thing just for you. It offers problem-and-hassle-free cars which are amazingly affordable. Visit Collie Car Rental so you check it for yourself.
Now we have the car rental issue sorted out, we better get going. Ready when you are...
1. The Steam Locomotive MuseumIt is a museum you don’t want to miss. Their collections of locomotives have been wonderfully restored to pristine condition that they all seem brand new, as if never been used.
You will not only enjoy taking pictures of their display you will also learn the significant role the railway line played on the development of Collie.
So you better those cameras, you don’t want to miss this for the world.
2. All Saints Anglican ChurchAfter seeing those impressive locomotives, let us be prepared to be amazed by the beauty of the craftsmanship of Australians. This church was built in 1915. They have amazing brass candlesticks and an altar crucifix which was from 17th century. But what is really interesting in this church is the very large mural which took 8 months to finish. The mural was originally painted on a large frame then it was attached to the church later on in 1922. The subject of this mural is also very interesting. On the far right are two miners in a pit tunnel and on the left side are two Aborigines under a tree.
3. Stockton LakeIt is not actually a lake but it used to be an open cut mine (not used anymore) that was transformed into a lake. So if you are in for some adrenaline, you go skiing here or you can always just camp around the lake.
So what do you think? You don’t just get a vacation but you get an adventure here in Collie. Don’t forget to tell Grandpa Ben about all of your adventures. Because in Collie, adventure is just around the corner.
Cheers!
-Grandpa Ben
