Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Mitcham
Got nothing left to do and want to fill that blank page in your planner?! Let’s book an excellent and affordable car with Mitcham Car Rental and have the trip of our lives! Our destination for today is Mitcham!
Mitcham is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, that has a population of 14, 211. Mitcham is about 20 kilometers east from Melbourne’s central business district. Its Local Government Area is the City of Whitehorse.
Mitcham was named after a farm owned by William Slater, who grew roses and herbs for perfumes and remedies. Originally, the area of Mitcham was commonly used for orchards, brick-making, and pottery. But since the 1950s postwar expansion, Mitcham has become a suburban area.
Mitcham is a village that you should see!
In Mitcham, you’ll see attractions such as:
1. The Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum ComplexVisit Schwerkolt Cottage in Deep Creek Road, and be ready to step back in time as you see the sights of the original pioneer stone cottage!
And the cottage is surrounded by 2.25 hectares of gardens and bushland!
You’ll definitely enjoy the charming gardens and the park like setting beside the Mullum Mullum Creek —with barbecue facilities, creek sidewalks, and a children’s playground.
The Cottage features a barn, smithy, wine cellar, smokehouse, and a museum which is open to the public during weekends and public holidays. And the stone cottage has been restored to its original condition and has been furnished in a style of the present period.
2. The Yarran Dheran ReserveYarran Dheran Reserve is situated on the southern bank of the Mullum Mullum Creek (it’s just near the Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum Complex).
Much of the area is indigenous and you’ll absolutely enjoy real fresh air!
Grab those walking boots and bike and have fun walking and biking around the green Yarran Dheran Reserve!
3. The Antonio ParkThe Park is named after the Antonio family who were first associated with the land in 1892. The Family’s original weekend shack is now part of the Antonio Park Primary School Grounds and in the early 1900’s, the family bought what is presently the main body of the park.
Bits of the garden are still present in some parts of the Park.
Many plants and animals can be seen in the park, and the people in Mitcham tend to preserve these gifts of nature!
I’ll post some of our photos soon! Take care!
