Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Dandenong

Dandenong is a suburb located approximately 30 kilometers southeast from Melbourne’s central business district in Victoria, Australia. Situated on Dandenong Creek with flat lands at the foothills of Mount Dandenong, the suburb is the main administrative centre for the City of Greater Dandenong Local Government Area.

Dandenong is also the hub of Melbourne’s most culturally diverse areas. It has approximately 55.5% of Greater Dandenong residents born overseas (from 156 different birthplaces) and about 51% from non-English speaking backgrounds!

Some of the “must see” attractions in Dandenong are:

1. The Dandenong Market

The Dandenong Market is said to be the most comprehensive market of the many suburban markets in Melbourne. Dandenong Market, though not as large as the Victoria Market, has a wider range of merchandise on sale —from carpets to stuffed animals. It has a large vegetable section, nut shops, and wet market.

Dandenong area has a large number of ethnic groups, and the atmosphere in the market will strongly reflect this fact.

2. The Drum Theatre (Dandenong’s landmark building)

The Drum Theatre, the activity hub of the Dandenong, is the recently renovated 19th century Dadenong Town Hall. The Theatre has won many building and architectural awards —including a National Building Awards and a Royal Institute of Architects Award.

This striking 521 seat theatre features well equipped and high quality audio, lighting and scenery systems, dressing rooms, and rehearsal facilities.  The Drum Theatre with it historical foyer and façade is wonderful for professional productions and touring, dance and calisthenics groups, community groups, schools and amateur performance companies, conferences, and meetings.

3. Mount Dandenong and the Mount Dandenong Observatory

Mount Dandenong is located between the tourist towns of Olinda and Kalorama in Melbourne’s beautiful Dandenong Ranges. Much of Mount Dandenong is occupied by the Dandenong Ranges National Park which offers a wide network of walking tracks through native Australian bush in a scenic and mountainous environment.

The Mount Dandenong Observatory is the premier tourist attraction in Mount Dandenong. It is also the highest point in the area. At the peak, you’ll see the Sky Restaurant, a café, BBQ and picnic areas, beautiful gardens, and different viewing platforms where you’ll see amazing views of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

And here’s what: Dandenong is primarily a private vehicle dependent community due to poorer public transport. Therefore, in visiting the place, having to rent a car is a very good idea. Dandenong Car Rental is the perfect site to book a car because you can have your car waiting for you anywhere in the country!
