Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Bairnsdale
It has been a while since I’ve last updated my journal. I’ve been really busy recently will those house things that need to be done. And the Seniors’ Club is planning to have a trip to Victoria, Australia. (Well, what else do we do with our pension? *laughing*) the trip will take about approximately a month. We’re planning to enjoy a long travel and really have fun. We made a list of the places we’re going to visit and one of those places is Bairnsdale. I made a little research about the place.
Bairnsdale is a small city located in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. It has a population of about 11,282, and is the regional center of eastern Victoria (along with Traralgon and Sale). The city is situated on the river flats of Mitchell River, near where the River flows into Lake King. The origin of the city’s name was said to be derived from the name of a property owned by the pioneer settler, Archibald Macleod.
Bairnsdale is a laid-back country town that offers captivating cultural trails and scenic drives.
Some of Bairnsdale treasures that we’re planning to see for ourselves are:
1. The Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic ChurchLocated in the Main Street, Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church is one of Bairnsdale’s notable landmarks. The Church has a distinctive tall tower and colorful murals on its ceilings and walls. The murals were painted by the Italian artist Francesco Floreani during the era of Great Depression. And up to this day, the beauty of the church still remains a beautiful creation.
2. The Mitchell River National ParkThe National Park surrounds the magnificent Mitchell River. The park is about 11,900 hectares and has some of Gippland’s best forest country. Inside the park, you’ll see several gorges which include the Den of Nargun (the Den of Nargun was mentioned in Aboriginal Legends). And bordering the gorges, you’ll find remnants of temperate rainforest.
The park has many activities for its visitors. If you’re into water and sports, you can enjoy canoeing and rafting. If you’re the person who likes to take long strolls, then the park also has the Mitchell River Walking Track. The track follows the west bank of the river from Angusyale through the gorge to the Den of Nargun. And halfway through the gorge, you’ll find the Billy Goat Bend that has a beautiful, semi-circular cliff (known as the Amphitheatre).
Aside from the Mitchell River Walking track, there is also a circuit walk that takes in the Bluff Lookout and the Mitchell River.
3. The Bataluk Cultural TrailThe Bataluk Cultural trail extends from Sale through Mitchell River National Park, Bairnsdale, and Orbost to Cape Conran. The trail traces the trading routes in the pre-colonial days and focuses on the elements of Koorie history and culture.
We’ll be leaving in about 3 days. Everything’s ready for our trip (especially the car/s that we’re going to use when we set foot on the place). I was assigned at booking our cars for the trip so I tried searching the net and I found the site Bairnsdale Car Rental. I booked our cars with their company because their rates are really travel friendly and they assure their customers that they’ll give them the best services a company could offer.
I’m excited for our trip!
