Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Woomera

Hey there, everyone! Grandpa Ben reporting for duty! I’m feeling explosive today! I think that’s what you get for having an Action-Adventure movie marathon the entire day! All my favourite action heroes, surviving bombs, grenades and dynamite, it just satisfies my adrenaline fix!

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, just like I am, you’re really going to have to book tickets to Woomera! Why? It’s an Aussie icon, of course! People instantly relate it with the testing of missiles and rockets way back during the Cold War, and the launching and tracking of spacecraft when the Space Age just boomed.

Woomera’s a breath of fresh air from the harsh South Australian outback. Woomera focuses on their 55-year history and the quirky town had plenty of attractions to keep the tourists coming. You’ve go parks and gardens and can drink wine while you fine dine. Awesome scene, yeah?

But wait! If you feel apprehensive about travelling around the city, that’s because you haven’t secured your own car rental yet. The only way you can ride in style, safety and convenience is if you get your car rental with the help of Woomera Car Rental where you can compare the best deals! Hurry and grab this once in a lifetime opportunity!

1. Woomera Observatory Facility

For your fist stop, drive to Cariwan St on the Souther edge of the Village. There you’ll find the Woomera Observatory Facility. You can check out the main observatory, a 3.5m purpose-built fiberglass dome which contains a 14” computer-controlled Schmidt Cassegrain telescope. This big boy’s got the ability of CCD imaging and astrophotography for digital and film SLR cameras
So if you have a Nikon or a Canon camera, they’ve got adaptors so you can couple with their main and secondary telescopes. You can also join the astrophotography party! Be another kind of paparazzi and take snapshots of the stars!

2. Missile Park

At the centre of the Woomera Village lies the Missile Park. It features an impressive collection of peace and war time relics. There’s also this outdoor defence museum that lets you check out an amazing display of rockets, missiles, aircrafts and bombs that were tested at the Range. It’s every little boy’s dream! Even mine! So you better get your butt down here. If I were you, I wouldn’t miss this opportunity for the world.

3. Woomera Heritage Museum

Your final destination has got to be Woomera Heritage Musuem! Here you’ll find out just how pivotal a role Woomera played in the past, present and future history of Australia. The place houses historical displays that are related to the Woomera Range and the closes Joint Defence Facility at Nurrungar. They also have a shop that sells a massive range of souvenirs including polo shirts, hats and caps, magnets, spoons, stubby holders, maps, postcards and photos of Woomera. Here’s where you buy something to take home to remind you of your trip to Woomera!

Woomera’s a city that takes pride in its defence history. Just because it develops weapons that keep enemies out and in their place, that doesn’t mean they don’t welcome friendly visitors like you and me! So grab this chance to explore this bombshell of a city!
Hope you have a great time. Cheers!
