Grandpa’s Guide to Driving in Katherine
Good day, mates! Lovely day isn’t it? The sun’s shining, the birds are singing. This calls for another one of my guides! That’s right; Grandpa Ben has some new stuff for you!
Today I’m going to take you through the golden town of Katherine. You can find this prosperous town 200 miles southeast of Darwin. It’s the fourth biggest settlement in the Northern Territory with an urban population of 5,849 since 2006.
Located in a promising grazing and soon-to-be agricultural country, the town’s main economy thrives around gold. Sadly enough, this has lessened because the great mine, Mount Todd has been closed. Aside from this, the town also boasts lots of churches, parks, clubs and a showground.
While you’re here, be it on a vacation or a road trip, it’d be a super smart move to book yourself a car rental by clicking here at http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au right now. Don’t bother yourself with the hassle of public transport and spend more precious time enjoying your break instead of waiting around for the next bus or train. Play it safe, get a stylish car to boot, book your rental deal now.
Once you’ve settled your mode of transportation, all you’ve got to worry about now is what sights to see while you’re here at Katherine! Well, good thing you’re tuned in to this guide, because I’ve got just the right places for you.
1. Cutta Cutta Caves Nature ParkStart off by driving 30 kilometers south of Katherine to Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park. The park sweeps across 1,500 hectare of karst limestone landscape and houses caves formed millions of years ago and still growing as we speak.
The park is open all year, showcasing its rich collection of native wildlife. Brown tree snakes, orange horseshoe bats. Go on a self-guided tour to see all these interesting animals for yourself. The caves, on the other hand, have to be closed on occasion according to the season.
2. 17 Mile FallsNow, here’s an activity that’s sure to fill up your days. I’m not kidding, trekking along the Jatbula Trail to reach the astounding 17 Mile Falls takes four to five days to complete. That 58 kilometre walk from Nitmiluk to Edith Falls is actually worth it, though, when you come across the majesty that is the 17 Mile Falls. After all the walking, stand back and just let this permanent water source take your breath away.
3. Flora River Nature ParkFor your last leg, driving 135 kilometers south west of Katherine will take you to Flora River Nature Park. It’s quite a quaint and beautiful getaway with its dense riverine vegetation and deep pools scattered here and there. The waterway gives rise for many exciting activities such as canoeing and boating. On the ground you can also have the option of taking short walks, or camping out to make the most of the special natural features.
And with such a relaxing finish to your Katherine itinerary, you can come home refreshed and mellowed out. With your head cleared out like that, it’ll be easier to hear yourself think. So c’mon! What are you waiting for? De-stress and come to Katherine!
I know Katherine has done me good. It should with you too.
Cheers!
