While Australia’s numerous cities have much going for them, the great outdoors make Australia truly unique. And, if neon lights and the fast city pace are part of your everyday living – returning to nature can make your eyes sparkle again like sticking your head in icy water but more fun.

Tasmania is jam- packed with untouched natural wonders to actively explore or just soak up at a relaxed pace. Inhale the world’s purest air under a canopy of ancient trees. Smell the summer air sweet with wild flowers as you walk through forest. Watch the summer rain fall under the shelter of an ancient tree. Scoop up a bit of pure (tannin- stained) water from a pristine creek and drink its crisp coolness. Visit the vast array of national parks that cover all sorts of terrain from peaceful beaches to untouched old growth forests.

Revisit your caveman ancestry in a pitch black cave. Trek, taste, fish, fossick, and stroll. Climb a remote peak. Shout out at the top of your lungs under a clear blue sky. On the isolated shores of a wilderness beach, exchange glances with amazing animals.

Go Wild!

The summers may be mild, but Tassie’s wilderness is extreme. Outdoor pursuits on the island range from diving to white- water rafting, to trekking through untouched ancient forests. The majority of Australia’s national parks have some trails marked for walking enthusiasts. Don’t expect that in Tassie. Some of the forest in the Tarkine has not been explored for centuries.

Take an extreme adventure. And there’s quite a selection to choose from. Caving. Cycling. Diving. Gliding/cable hang gliding. Jet boating. Kayaking. Off-road touring. Rock climbing/abseiling. Surfing. White water rafting. Not specific enough? Picton or Franklin’s rapids are particularly amazing for rafting. Soar over Trevallyn on a cable hang glider. Kayak from Kettering, Coles Bay, Strahan, Hobart or Port Arthur. Trek the island’s high country. Rope up on Hobart’s Mt Wellington or Launceston Gorge. Abseil off a coastal cliff at Freycinet.
