Speed Cameras and Rental Cars

See this video first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOrLnExLwLw

If you watched the posted video, then you probably saw that the guy driving the silver sedan was caught by a speeding camera. He alleges to have been going about 67 miles per hour in what he thought was a 65 mile per hour speed zone. Apparently, the city changed the speed limit to 55 to catch more unknowing speeders. This is the young man's assumption in the video, anyway.

There really are no ways to avoid a speeding or red light camera unless you simply go the speed limit or completely stop at red lights. Many people claim that you can go close to 11 mph over the speed limit on the highway and eight over the speed limit on main roads with the camera catching you. There was no information on the internet to confirm or deny anything. Even if there was, each state, and possibly each individual city, is going to have different laws.

Fortunately, these tickets do not add any points to your license. However, fines can be administered from anywhere between $50 and $1,000. And if you are renting the car at the time of the picture/recording, you are going to be tacked on another processing fee. Apparently all this money is going to funding private businesses. More specifically, funding the ATS, who are the people that put up the speeding and red light cameras. Although this way doesn't seem like it would be thorough, their previous way of doing things was much more confusing and ended in a lot more people getting incorrect tickets.

When renting a car through main car rental shops such as Hertz and Avis, it is very doubtful that you read the fine print at the bottom of the page. These words explain a very compromising agreement between you and the renter. If you are caught by a camera speeding, then the renter will forward the ticket and a processing fee of $30. They say this is justified because they are having to take the time to find who the driver was and then they must send out the tickets. What is even worse, is that the rental company sends your credit card and information to the police department. To some, it may feel like a privacy breach.

Of course it is always possible to dispute the ticket. There are ways to you can go online and view the videos or photos of your speeding citation. (The website will be listed below.) If you think that you've been given the ticket without a justifiable cause, then it can be fought in court. And if this is won, then you will be reimbursed the ticket price and the fee.

Whether a ticket has been issued via a police officer or camera, private car or rental car, a ticket is only justified under the perfect circumstances and evidence.
