Grandpas Guide to Driving in Bathurst

The son of my best friend from the Philippines arrived early this afternoon. My friend asked if his son, Derek, could stay in my place for about a few days because he’s planning to have a trip at Bathurst. Instead of going directly to Bathurst, my friend has advised his son to come so that I could give him some tips about the places to visit at Bathurst because he knows that I’ve been there.

My first tip for Derek is to avail car rental so that he could easily move around Bathurst. The Vroom Vroom Vroom Company has the best car rental offers. Visit their website at vroomvroomvroom.com.au and find the chicest and cheapest cars in just a few clicks of the mouse.

Here’s an overview about Bathurst:

Bathurst is a provincial town in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The location of the place is about 200 kilometers west from Sydney. Bathurst is the seat of the Bathurst Regional Council and the oldest inland settlement in Australia. It has a population of about 28,992 based on the census of 2006.

The town of Bathurst has a long history of racing which began with motorcycle racing in 1911.

Today, Bathurst is synonymous with motorsport because of the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit. It hosts the Bathurst 12 Hour motor race during February and the Bathurst 1000 motor race during October. And throughout this period, the population swells with tourists.

My trip:

1. Mount Panorama Racing Circuit

The Mount Panorama Racing Circuit —6.213 kilometers in length, about 874 meters above sea level and a scenic drive— was opened in 1938 to the public and became the home of motor racing in Australia. It started its career as a dusty country track but now, Mount Panorama Racing Circuit is included at the world’s top 3 motor racing circuits.

Mount Panorama is also the home of Australia’s oldest rifle range that also provides facilities for other sports such as archery and clay pigeon shooting, the Panorama Motorcycle Club, and the Bathurst Light Car Club. There is also a flora reserve located at the top of the mountain.

2. Abercrombie Caves

The Abercrombie Caves is about an hour’s drive from Bathurst on the Trunkey Creek Goulburn road. It is a perfect place for bird watching and photography. On-site units and a cottage are available. There are also hot showers, laundry facilities, and a kiosk in the area.

Aside from the many caves, Abercrombie Caves feature the largest and most famous natural arch located in the southern hemisphere. It includes the historic Gold miners dance platform that is more than 120 years old and it is still used today! Tours are available if you want to go exploring.

The Grove Creek that runs through the heart of Abercrombie Caves is also a must see. And a few kilometers away, it falls over a cliff face about 70 meters below.

Bathurst is truly a beautiful place.

A few days from now, Derek will be going to Bathurst. I’m flattered because he asked me for some advice in what I do best —traveling and roadtrips. *laughing* I think I better go to sleep now. Derek and I will have a long chat tomorrow because I’ll be inquiring a lot about my best friend.

Good night and Happy Holidays!
